Krejci and Wheeler have become tight on and off the ice

Everyone can see that there’s a link between Boston Bruins center David Krejci and winger Blake Wheeler when the two 22-year-old forwards are on the ice together.

Whether they’re skating as two-thirds of a line 5-on-5, hooking up on the power play or even killing a penalty together, both players seem to have a sixth sense that always allows them to find one another. That’s why they’ve been on a line together almost the entire season, and they’ve been a major factor in the Bruins’ tremendous start.

What not many get to see is the way the American and the Czech teammates get along once the skates and sweaters are off. Often kidding around with each other and discussing any number of topics, Krejci and Wheeler have become close friends.

“We have the same girlfriend,” Krejci recently joked when asked why he and Wheeler get along so well.

Then Krejci seriously answered the question.

“I don’t know it’s just … since the season started we just hang out together. We find a lot of good stuff to do together; we’ve got a lot of stuff in common. And he’s the same age as me, so we understand each other I guess.”

Wheeler agreed that age and sense of humor seems to overcome any differences the two player have had in their upbringing or their careers.

“I think we have similar senses of humor. I think we joke around in the same way and that helps a lot obviously,” said the rookie. “It’s just kind of one of those things – when you find people you get along with, it’s just easier to hang out with them. And you like to play with them on the ice too, so we get along well off the ice which definitely helps on the ice.”

Wheeler and Krejci’s friendship is typical of what goes on in the harmonious Bruins’ dressing room. Many different languages and cultures are represented, but in the end, they’re all just Bruins.

“It’s funny because I haven’t really been exposed to too many different cultures and too many different people of different backgrounds. I think what I’ve seen more than anything, once you get past the language barrier and you can communicate with each other, everyone’s pretty much the same,” explained Wheeler. “Everyone’s kind of on level ground with one another. It’s kind of cool to have that kind of dynamic in a room where you’ve got guys from all over the world. But we joke around about the same things and get along that way.”
