Northeast Division: Report says Kaberle’s making a list

Kaberle

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle already agreed to wave his no-trade clause. Now Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun reports that the veteran defenseman has agreed to submit a list of 10 teams he would accept a trade to for general manager Brian Burke to use leading up to the March 4 trade deadline.

Kaberle has two more years left on his contract at $4.25 million per season. A Czech native, Kaberle was actually Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara’s D partner during this winter’s NHL All-Star Game in Montreal.

MK: Chemistry-wise and skills-wise, he’d be a perfect addition to solidify the Bruins for the stretch run and the playoffs. But there are other forces at play here. On the one hand, we don’t know if the Bruins would be on Kaberle’s list and we don’t know if Burke would trade one of his best players to a division rival. And then from the Boston standpoint, as I’ve mentioned numerous times, a rental player would be more attractive because the Bruins will really need some cap space this summer to take care of their own big-time free agents (Phil Kessel, David Krejci).

Elsewhere around the division:

•Vancouver is now 11-0-1 in its last 12 meetings with Montreal, as the Habs dropped to 1-3-0 on its current six-game road trip last night.

•The Ottawa Senators are officially delusional, as their four-game winning streak has general manager Bryan Murray thinking about being a buyer at the trade deadline.
