Northeast Division: Laraque looking elsewhere for playing time

Laraque

Laraque

A healthy scratch the past two games for the Montreal Canadiens, veteran forward Georges Laraque might want to go elsewhere in order to get playing time. Although he hasn’t asked for a trade, according to Pat Hickey of The Gazette, the tough guy said that he might be better appreciated somewhere other than Montreal.

MK: The Canadiens found out the hard way that being tough in today’s NHL doesn’t mean spending big on a fighter — it means adding players that can play and fight when necessary (like Boston’s Shawn Thornton). The Habs are on the hook for $1.5 million for two more years for Laraque and I wouldn’t expect anyone to help them out via a trade.

UPDATE: Now Laraque has recanted, although not before head coach Guy Carbonneau took some shots at him. Habs Inside/Out has the comments and the audio clips.

Elsewhere around the division:

•Unlike Laraque, Chris Neil is happy where he is — Ottawa. But his contract status and the slow talks to extend his deal might force the Senators to move him.

•Ottawa might put Martin Gerber on re-entry waivers, so that begs the question, ‘Who wants him?’

•The flu blug has deserted Patrick Lalime, so he can start tonight for Buffalo.
