Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reported today that the Ottawa Senators and the agent for veteran winger Chris Neil will meet one last time before Wednesday’s trade deadline to hammer out a contract extension with the potential unrestricted free agent. If a deal isn’t reached, it’s expected the Sens will move Neil to a contender for no less than a draft pick or two.
MK: Unless Neil agrees to take a hometown discount, the Sens would be wise to cut their losses and free up the cap space, plus open a roster spot for a younger player to get some ice time. They might not know it yet, but they should be in a rebuild mode. From the Boston Bruins’ perspective, Neil might make sense because of his history with Peter Chiarelli, from his days in Ottawa, and his ability to make things happen from a bottom-six spot.
Elsewhere around the division:
•Red-hot Jaroslav Halak missed Montreal’s practice today with the flu.
•The Buffalo Sabres’ top offensive performers are not producing — so it’s no surprise the team is struggling to score and to win.
