Havelid

If the Boston Bruins don’t land a big-time star (Chris Pronger, Tomas Kaberle) to bolster their defense before Wednesday’s trade deadline, they might try to upgrade with a lesser name but someone that still improves their back end.

Veteran Atlanta blueliner Niclas Havelid would be such a player, and in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution Mike Knobler reports that Thrashers general manager Don Waddell acknowledged his team is open to offers for the 35-year-old unrestricted-free-agent-to-be.

MK: This is the type of guy I expect Peter Chiarelli to add at the deadline. He could plug right in to the Bruins’ bottom four and gives them the luxury of sitting someone like Shane Hnidy or even moving Mark Stuart or Andrew Ference for help up front (probably a forward that’s Havelid’s equal in notoriety but a solid veteran that could serve the Bruins’ second or third line).
