WILMINGTON, Mass. — Boston Bruins winger Phil Kessel, who did not practice with the team today at Ristuccia Arena, will not join the club on its two-game road trip to Toronto and Philadelphia this weekend, head coach Claude Julien confirmed.
Julien explained that Kessel has an undisclosed injury and he will be reassessed at the beginning of next week. When pressed further, Julien would not take the bait to reveal anything else.
If the lines for Saturday night’s game in Toronto are the same as today’s practice, Blake Wheeler will skate on right wing with P.J. Axelsson also flanking Marc Savard.
Kessel missed six games earlier this season with mononucleosis. He might still be feeling the effects of a Jan Hejda hit in Columbus March 10, but that is pure speculation on my part. Kessel also missed time in his rookie season due to testicular cancer, which he defeated and then returned to win the 2006-07 Masterton Trophy.
