It’s the scenario that no one who roots for the Boston Bruins wants to even imagine. Perhaps, the folks that run the team also have nightmares about it.
But the fact is, goaltender Tim Thomas — one of the favorites for this year’s Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goaltender — is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer and could conceivably leave for greener pastures. Would you put it past Detroit to try to bring home its native son? What about Los Angeles, Tampa Bay or Philadelphia? Any might think that putting the veteran puck-stopper between their pipes could be a franchise-changer.
According to USA Today star columnist Kevin Allen, Thomas is the 20th-best potential UFA out there. Thomas is also the top goaltender in the rankings.
MK: There’s no doubt Thomas is happy here. But what if the money is greater in another city, especially Detroit? The Bruins have to be careful to not assume a hometown discount is in order or they could wind up losing not only their No. 1, but a guy who’d be a great mentor for prospect Tuukka Rask and a player that’s possilby the franchise’s most popular.
