Bruin of the Week

Thomas

This is not a dream Tim Thomas.

Five year ago, it looked like the portly puck-stopper would never get a chance to strut his stuff in the NHL on a regular basis. Now he’s a favorite to the win the Vezina Trophy and, starting next season, he’ll be among the best-compensated goaltenders when his four-year, $20 million contract extension kicks in.

But this past week wasn’t just beneficial to Thomas’ bottom line. It was also a boost to the Bruins, who rode Thomas’ 62 saves to two of their three wins in a 3-0-0 week. For his efforts in the period between last Monday and yesterday, Thomas is my Bruin of the Week.

Thomas held down the fort against Ottawa Thursday before the Bruins came up with enough offense to make his 31 saves stand up in a 2-1 victory. Then Thomas made the same amount of saves but didn’t allow a puck to get past — nor did he allow Sean Avery’s “accident” go unpunished — in a 1-0 win over the New York Rangers Saturday.

Other nominees this week were centers David Krejci (0-3-3, plus-1) and Marc Savard (1-1-2, plus-2, GWG vs. Ottawa).
