Ference’s first steps onto the ice

MONTREAL — For the first time since he was injured in the Boston Bruins’ April 4 win over the New York Rangers, defenseman Andrew Ference hit the ice this morning at the Bell Centre after his team’s morning skate in preparation for Game 3 of its Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Montreal Canadiens.

Ference, whose injury is undisclosed, skated briefly under the watchful eye of physical therapist Scott Waugh.

“I don’t think it’s any imminent return as far as the next couple games,” said Ference after he broke a sweat and messed around with a puck for a short time. “It’s definitely nice to get on. Each day you take steps, as far as on-ice stuff. I guess it depends on where the series goes and how this goes.”

Ference confirmed that he was injured in that game against New York and that he’s been able to do off-ice workouts even while out of the lineup (ruling out the possibility that the injury is head-related). Beyond that, it’ll be wait and see for Ference rejoining the Bruins during their postseason run.
