In his postgame press conference after his Carolina Hurricanes beat the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series Thursday night, Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice alluded to the tough times overtime hero Scott Walker faced leading up to his shining moment.

Maurice wasn’t just speaking in reference to the scrutiny of  Walker’s sucker punch, and today we found out what the bench boss meant. The Hurricanes today revealed the Walker’s wife Julie was diagnosed with cervical cancer during the course of the Bruins-Hurricanes series.

“Julie Walker’s cancer is treatable, and she is expected to make a full recovery,” the Hurricanes’ press released statement.

Also in the release, Scott Walker had this to say: “My wife is an amazing person and we are looking forward to a positive outcome from this challenge. I will address the situation with the media this afternoon, but my family would appreciate its privacy going forward.”
