More mock draft mayhem

I just noticed that NHL.com has put up three recent mock drafts from its crack staff. And it seems two of them have the Boston Bruins selecting Chris Kreider out of Phillips Andover.

Shawn P. Roarke says the Bruins will stay local by picking the center, while colleague Adam Kimelman echoes those sentiments and points out the Bruins can keep a close eye on Kreider when he’s skating at Boston College starting in 2010.

Brad Holland, however, predicts the Bruins will tap defenseman Simon Despres at No. 25 overall in the first round. Despres skates for Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

The U.S. Postal Service finally saw fit to deliver my The Hockey News Draft Preview, so I can relay you some excerpts from that publication’s scouting report on these guys.

For Kreider, who stands 6-foot-2, 201 pounds and is ranked No. 24 by THN, the magazine writes: “Kreider’s skating is off-the-charts good.” But THN quotes a scout that says it is difficult to judge a prospect against prep school competition.

On Despres, a 6-4, 214-pound blueliner that’s ranked No. 12 by THN, the scouting report says: “On the positive side of the ledger, Despres is a good skater for a big man and plays a steady game.” This is after the report points out some scouts were disappointed with Despres’ showing during his season, which featured 2-30-32 totals in 66 games.
