Northeast Division: Bruins reportedly on Heatley’s short list

Heatley

Heatley

According to Bruce Garrioch of Sun Media, the Boston Bruins are on Ottawa winger Dany Heatley’s list of 10 preferred destinations should the Senators grant his trade request. But as Garrioch writes, the Bruins (like Detroit) would need to do some major salary-cap maneuvering in order to fit the former one-time 50-goal scorer on their roster.

Another hold up to the deal is a $4 million bonus Heatley is due after July 1. So the Sens want to deal him before that kicks in, and other teams want to wait until that bonus is paid. To me, there are just too many factors here working against a trade getting done unless the Sens are just so desperate to rid themselves of Heatley that they pay the bonus of take a lot less than value in return. Their leverage is shot with Heatley having gone public with his trade demand, not to mention his receded numbers from last season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Heatley still skating for Ottawa when the 2009-1o season opens.

Elsewhere around the division:

Toronto might have interest in drafting Zack Kassian, who general manager Brian Burke describes as “big, tough, skilled, hostile and belligerent.”

•Buffalo GM Darcy Regier admits he “always feels the pressure to get it done” and touches on a number of other draft and free agency topics.
