MONTREAL — There was good news today for the Boston Bruins in terms of the 2009-10 salary cap.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports that the NHLPA has voted to trigger the five-percent escalator, meaning the cap will be within a couple hundred thousand dollars of last year’s number. That gives Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli a little more wiggle room as he tries to retain Phil Kessel, Byron Bitz and Matt Hunwick as restricted free agents and also improve his team.
