Hossa insanity boggles the hockey world

UPDATE: The Hossa deal is official and TSN reports it’s $62.4 million over 12 years. This is from Kevin Allen of USA Today’s Twitter page: “With TSN saying Hossa signed with Chicago for 12 years, I have ‘Hawks at $34 mill for eight players in 2010-11 witn no Kane, Toews, Keith.” All I can say is, wow.

TSN is reporting at this hour that the Chicago Blackhawks have secured the services of free-agent winger Marian Hossa. And they’re reporting that he has signed a 12-year, $62 million deal. I’ll update as this becomes official.

Earlier today, Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe reported that the Boston Bruins were in pursuit of Hossa. But if the term TSN is reporting is correct, Hossa obviously left the Bruins’ stratosphere somewhere around year five.

if those numbers are correct, 5.167 a year for Hossa? lower cap hit than the sedins? i can see him taking a pay cut because he wasnt the performer he was expected to be in detroit, especially in the finals, but there’s no way the sedins are more valuable. sedins contract is way too high regardless of hossa’s signing. good news for the bruins, hossa’s deal might help lower the market on kessel.

Twelve years seems ridiculously long. I mean I know that long term contracts have become Detroit’s favorite thing to do, but seems to be a risky thing for the Hawks – esp when they have Toews and Kane contracts coming up. I have a hard time seeing Hossa as being a good fit for the team, but clearly someone thinks he is the perfect fit. Good luck to them.
