The Sedins are staying in VAN.
So I’m going to drag my attention away from this Andy Roddick-Lleyton Hewitt Wimbledon match to pass on some of my wisdom about the early moves today.
It seems that even though everybody loves twins, The Twins love Vancouver a little more. So Henrik and Daniel Sedin are going to stay in Vancouver with matching five-year, $30.5 million deals that include no-movement clauses. The fan in me is disappointed that they didn’t try to move to Toronto or Montreal to face the Boston Bruins six times a year, but obviously from a competitive standpoint the Sedins’ decision makes life a little easier in the Northeast Divison for the Bruins.
While Mattias Ohlund on paper is the type of puck-mover and defender the Bruins are seeking, and his cap hit of $3.5 million seems reasonable, there was no way Boston was going to hand a seven-year deal to anyone, let alone a 32-year-old. This smells like Tampa Bay, which lured Ohlund away from Vancouver, is operating under the same plans as last summer when the Lightning threw tons of cash at the likes of Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts and still wound up with the second pick in the draft. Well, on the bright side the Lightning might not win but their players get to hang out in Ybor City.
As for Toronto, they lost out on the Sedin Bros., but they did add Colton Orr, which means they’ll at least play with the physicality general manager Brian Burke is looking for. Orr and Bruins grappler Shawn Thornton have had their share of bouts over the years, so that rivalry can continue. But so far Toronto has yet to upgrade its talent, which is the only way it can be considered a contender going forward.
