There might be better ways to cool off on a 90-degree day in August than thinking ahead to the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, but right now I don’t even want to think of one.

Craig Custance at The Sporting News took some time yesterday to ponder four issues the U.S. Olympic team will have to address during its upcoming camp in Illinois and beyond. Among the issues, the goaltender battle between Boston Bruins All-Star Tim Thomas and Buffalo standout Ryan Miller.

“It’s not a decision that will be made anytime soon,” writes Custance, “but positive first impressions certainly don’t hurt.

The New York Times Slap Shot blog has been looking at each country’s potential player pool, beyond North America. Today, it looked at Germany, which should include Bruins winger Marco Sturm. Prior posts looked at the Slovak Republic (Zdeno Chara) and Finland. With still a lot to prove at the NHL level, Bruins prospective backup goaltender Tuukka Rask didn’t make the top six on the Times’ list for Finland, but a strong start to the ’09-10 season could at least put Rask in position to be an injury replacement.
