The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the news today for more than just general manager Brian Burke upping the ante in the Phil Kessel sweepstakes. Lance Hornby of The Sun reports that head coach Ron Wilson is in no rush to name a new captain. The Leafs went without one last season.

“It might take all year, it might take no time at all,” the coach told The Sun. “This is the Toronto Maple Leafs, you look at the line of captains and (realize) you just don’t throw that ‘C’ around. You don’t stick a letter on a guy because everyone thinks you should have a captain. I won’t do that until we’re totally committed to somebody. It’s not a temporary position.”

Burke, meanwhile, did more than talk Kessel. He also declared that his intention is for the Leafs to qualify for the playoffs, as Mark Zwolinski of The Star reports. To me, the Leafs are where the Boston Bruins were two years ago with a general manager first getting to put his stamp on the club. So I see the Leafs at least fighting until the last day of the season for the last playoff spot or two.

Elsewhere around the division:

•Let’s face it, Dany Heatley ruined Bryan Murray’s summer. And for that he should at least be forced to play for Phoenix (my thoughts, not the link’s).

•Montreal is getting an early look at prospect Mac Bennett.
