No Savard, no Chara, now what?

The Bruins already knew they’d be facing Toronto without Marc Savard against the Leafs tonight. Then came the even worse news, as they found out that defenseman Zdeno Chara wouldn’t be available because of an undisclosed injury.

Boston.com first reported that Chara did not participate in the morning skate. While head coach Claude Julien told the assembled media at Air Canada Centre the injury occurred Sunday in Pittsburgh, general manager Peter Chiarelli said on NHL Live! that the injury might’ve first been suffered during the Olympics.

In Chara’s place, defenseman Jeff Penner will make his NHL debut. He was called up from Providence (AHL) on an emergency basis Monday.

According to a few Twitter feeds, Vladimir Sobotka centered Milan Lucic and Miroslav Satan during the skate.

As for Savard, Chiarelli said during that same NHL Live! interview that the star center is scheduled to see a specialist on Thursday and that Savard is still suffering headaches and dizziness. Considering those symptoms, and that Savard would have to be symptom-free to restart hockey activity, there’s a chance he could be lost for the season.
