BOSTON — Shawn Thornton took revenge on Matt Cooke and then the Bruins reverted to being an offensively challenged, under-talented, inconsistent hockey club.

But they got help in the standings, with both the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning losing. However, Atlanta won to pull within three points, which is also where the Rangers stand.
