Julien channeling ‘Torts’

Tortorella

BOSTON — As readers Jon Jordan and Chris Gorski have pointed out, Bruins coach Claude Julien isn’t the first to espouse the “safe is death” philosophy.

By all Google searches, John Tortorella used “safe is death” as his rallying cry with Tampa Bay and has tried to bring that to the New York Rangers.

The good news: the Lightning won the Cup in 2004 behind that approach. The bad news: if the Bruins use it to sell tickets, they’ll have to give Tortorella a cut of the profits.

Update: It has been pointed out to me that Bruins assistant coach Craig Ramsay actually came up with “safe is death” and brought it to Tortorella in Tampa. Now he has brought it to the Hub. Hope ‘Rammer’ trademarked that one. As Globe writer Kevin Paul Dupont can tell you, the Bruins are always looking to borrow a slogan or two.
