Inflator in effect

The NHLPA has announced it has voted to maintain the five percent growth factor, otherwise known as the inflator, for the 2010-11 season.

This is great news for numerous teams, including the Bruins, because the salary cap will now rise and teams will have more wiggle room to work in free agency. Some earlier estimates had it going as high $58 million for next season. Had the PA not voted for the inflator, the cap would’ve have remained static or even dropped slightly. The NHL and NHLPA will announce the exact amount some time between now and July 1.

Updated: The NHLPA executive board has also voted to renew the Collective Bargaining Agreement through the end of the 2011-12 season. This means that NHL teams will have a 7.5 percent cushion for bonuses to work with within their salary cap.
