Quiet Chiarelli satisfied for now

Chiarelli

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli made what he termed “preemptive moves” before today’s opening of the free agent market by acquiring Nathan Horton, drafting Tyler Seguin and re-signing Mark Recchi, Dennis Seidenberg and Johnny Boychuk.

So that all he did on “Free Agent Frenzy Day” was retain winger Daniel Paille didn’t leave the GM wanting. Chiarelli said he spoke to a couple agents and a couple GMs for talks that will probably be revisited over the next few days and weeks.

“It was a quiet day all in all,” he said.

Chiarelli said that he reached out to the agents for unrestricted free agents Steve Begin and Miro Satan and told them the Bruins might be interested in touching base later in free agency. But for now, Chiarelli said, he has to leave some space for young guys to compete for jobs.

As for restricted free agents, Chiarelli said it “might be tight” but he’s confident he can get Mark Stuart, Blake Wheeler and Gregory Campbell signed underneath the salary cap.

As for adding a veteran forward down the road, Chiarelli said it would be possible but not someone with as high a profile as Mike Modano.
