The Washington Capitals today signed 24-year-old defenseman Jeff Schultz to a four-year, $11 million deal to avoid arbitration.
Schultz was a plus-50 last season playing on a great offensive team alongside Mike Green. Throw that number out and look at his stats: nine goals, 44 assists and 53 points. Over those seasons he missed nine regular-season games.
If you figure in his injury-shortened season last year, and the fact that he has never played with a partner as talented as Green, Stuart obviously comes up short of Schultz’s production. But there’s no telling how he might compare in the future, if given the chance to play top-four minutes. Although the Bruins don’t have enough salary-cap space to make an offer in Schultz’s realm, Stuart looks more likely to make a salary in the range I predicted — $2 to 2.5 million — earlier this week.

Maybe he walks away from the arbitration awards for either Wheeler or Campbell, or both. Maybe Sturm’s projected LTIR will give enough space? I wish he could pull off dumping Ryder, ha!
Boise….Throw Seguin in there too, he has yet to be signed. No doubt PC has to trade Savard, Thomas or both and/or buyout a contract(Ryder seems to be a popular choice umong Bruins fans) although I dont agree. PC’s back is against the wall, and other GM’s know this….I have a bad feeling the B’s will be giving up good asset(s) while getting little value in return.
According to an article on NHL.com (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=533862) Chiarelli’s got around 3.8 in cap space to work with. With that remaining space, he hopes to sign – Stuart, Wheeler and Campbell and stay under the cap. If Stuart takes home a salary in the range you predict, how could the Bruins also sign Campbell and Wheeler while avoiding arbitration? Is the above mentioned salary prediction for Stuart an amount per season or an amount to be made over a couple seasons? Please explain to those of us who aren’t very business savy as to how this would work. Thanks.
With Hunwick and Ference in the mix next season we really need the toughness of Stuart. I hope accepts the offer your predicting.
