At its announcement press conference for the 2011 Winter Classic in Pittsburgh, the NHL declared the Penguins-Washington Capitals rivalry as the “fiercest” in the NHL.

What they said may sound good and they really really REALLY want it to be the fiercest because of all the starpower, as others have already said, crosby and ovy.

They are not the fiercest rivalry by a longshot! Certainly, the Chicago Detroit rivalry is as deep seated as the Montreal Boston Rivalry to the point where those in the two american cities will harass fellow fans without relent. That can certainly be compared to the Boston Montreal rivalry fairly, BUT Pittsburgh and Washington? BAH!

Boston-Montreal by far. Don’t forget that Colorado-Detroit was a good rivalry, too. That is if you are talking about past and present rivalries.
I, too, disagree with the NHL about Washington-Pittsburgh being the “fiercest”rivalry in the NHL. It’s purely based on Crosby vs Ovechkin & money. How many times have they met in the playoffs? Once? They most certainly are a rivalry (the beginning of one), but not even close to being the “fiercest”.
The Bos-Mtl rivalry has so many more dimensions when comparing the other “rivalries”
- Country Pride
- Clash in cultures (American vs psuedo-euro)
- Original Six
- Disparity in championships
- Historical caliber of players… and the list goes on
When you get harrassed on your way to the Cape by a Quebec registered driver, you know the rivalies fierce.
No surprise Boston-Montreal has a commanding lead on the best Bruins site in cyber-space. However, I truley believe, throughout history this is the fiercest NHL rivalry. As a matter of fact Boston sports have some of the best rivalry’s in all the major sports: NFL Patriots-Colts, NBA Celtics-Lakers, MLB Sox-Yanks.

I think the results of this poll will be biased also, because we are mostly Bruins fans. I think the the NHL big wigs are getting things confused with the “WASH-PIT” (yes, they should) rivalry. The ‘fierce’ rivalry is CROSBY vs. OVECHKIN, not the teams. That is what sells the tix.
