Savard/By S. Bradley
Great job by Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun to track down Bruins center Marc Savard and get him on the record about his feelings in regards to this summer’s trade rumors.
“They hurt me a little bit just because I went to Boston and I helped to build that team back up,” Savard told Garrioch Friday for an article posted Saturday night on The Sun’s Web site. “Since I’ve been there, I’ve really tried to work hard with the young guys and being a core player. I was really focused on staying there for the rest of my career. To hear all this stuff this summer bothered me inside more than anything else.”
The rumors aside, Savard told Garrioch he expects to be in Boston when training camp opens.
“Right now I’m a Bruin and that’s the way it is,” he said. “(But) it’s been tough.”

//Marc needs to suck it up and maybe just not open his mouth all the time to the press//
This is the first time he’s said anything all summer.
What’s with the “all the time” stuff?
And I thought fans liked it when athletes spoke their minds?
I also don’t get the “he makes a lot of money.” So effing what? Does that mean you don’t have feelings? Are fans actually getting on his case because he WANTS to stay in Boston? He comes back from a concussion and plays too many minutes because he’s trying to help his team win, and people crap all over him?
And thank GOD he wasn’t traded for that overrated, overpaid marhsmallow Kaberle. Yech.
Can’t wait for training camp to start. I’ll be at Ristuccia loudly cheering Savvy on, even if nobody else is.
suck it up. Its the GM’s job to explore every possibilty to improved the team. A real man who wears black doesn’t care about the rumors. He keeps his mouth shut and comes to work.
Shenanigans.
I’m with Dave. He was never actively shopped.
Was he available? Of course! Everyone except that #2 pick was available.
Was he shopped? Nope. Newspaper creation if I ever saw one.
Just wait, there will be reports that Kaberle has been asked to waive his no trade. Why? because it makes sense. Is it true? No. But that never stopped a story before.
Shenanigans.
[...] The Bruins Blog — Savard says he’s ‘hurt’It is strange that Boston is supposedly shopping Marc Savard so soon after giving him a long-term contract. [...]
Whenever a player is on the chopping block for one reason or another, it seems like people get up-in-arms a little too quickly.First with Wheeler, who so many people were eager to throw under the bus because he has yet to come into his own as a physical force… he’s a big man with hands, and he’s going to grow into his role, but it seemed like no one believed that Wheeler himself is motivated by his shortcomings. He’s going to be a 50+ point-per-year guy in many years to come.
Now onto Savard. I feel like people need to keep in mind the pressures that come with being a professional athlete… being put on the spot about the too many men call probably made Savvy uncomfortable, and I’m sure he realizes that he could’ve worded his response better. But honestly, who cares… it was a team-wide collapse that cost us the Philly series. If anything, it was Savard who gave us all hope in the series, with his GWG in Game 1. Being at the Garden for that game was an unreal experience… and when you look at pictures of Savard’s face after that goal, as well as the fan reaction, you KNOW he is as beloved a Bruin as any.
Sentimentality aside, people need to stop dumping on Savvy… he has been the most consistent offensvie player for the B’s when healthy, he’s a point-per-game player (and will be for at least another few years), and he’s the catalyst on the PP. He’s going to be well worth his 4mil/yr cap hit, especially with him feeding passes to talent like Horton, Seguin, Wheeler, Lucic, and possibly even Bergy depending on how Julien mixes up the lines/PP. Ryder and Sturm should be gone before people even THINK about wishing Savard out of Boston… they alone account for 7.5mil, and are both “right place, right time” sort of goal scorers.
He is not saying the Boston Bruins hurt me.. he is saying the rumors hurt. Who would it not affect when hearting you are a locker room cancer and all this other crap.
Again, the Bruins did not spread these rumors and he is not hurt or mad at the organization.
I’m sure making 7 million a year hurts too. Seriously, after last year, I have no problem with him feeling a little”hurt”. Us fans felt it all last year as we watched them sleepwalk through 90% of the season.
You hurt us, we hurt you, yada yada yada. Ok. Now lets get on with putting the GD puck in the net and knock off all the friken Dr Phil BS.
Everyone chill, all he said was he was bothered “a little bit” by the rumors. Anybody in his shoes would be bothered to some degree, whether they admit it or not. Maybe he could have answered the question differently, however he answered honestly. I dont believe he will carry any hurt feelings into the season, in fact, he will “suck it up” and have another productive season for the Bruins.
Lots of fans in your corner Savy, especially my GF.
Eric has it right. They keep Savy for a year – two tops. Let his trade options open up while Seguin, Colborne, Suave, Caron, Knight all develop – and then Ship Savy for the last couple years of his contract. It was a smart contract in hindsight – and I think the Bs will feel lucky they got ‘stuck’ with him instead of Hall.
Savard’s a great player but come on. Grow a pair. Yes, it sucks there were trade rumors but you know what, it sucked for Atlanta when you left them but they’re not crying over spilled milk. You got hurt, badly, came back and didn’t play all that well and then threw a teammate under the bus. What did you expect? Tea and cookies?
For the love of the salary-cap, dealing No. 91 is a no brainer; that seven-year deal was a ridiculous one.
If he got dealt for Kaberle (an equal value in terms of cap-hit) I’d do cartwheels from here (Lowell) to the TD Garden. They’d get a bona-fide No. 1/2 blue-liner to quarterback the PP while washing $24M for the next seven seasons. Plus, adding a solid defenseman would put some extra pressure on Ference and Hunwick to fight for that No. 6 job, while shipping one to the 9th floor come October.
I’m a huge Savvy fan but have to agree with a few of you Marc needs to suck it up and maybe just not open his mouth all the time to the press.
Savard has an ego and a mouth to match me thinks Marc is a little sensitive because of the run in he had with the Calgary coaching staff and the Flames media ran with it. That’s over now and Savard needs to go out with unabashed intensity to start the season with to huge wingers Horton and Lucic.
I don’t want my summer to speed up but darn it I want hockey to start soon! Go Bs!
savvy, you should have publicly shrugged off trade rumors like timmah did. your days in a spoked b sweater are numbered. i’d be shocked if you’re not traded before next season for a playoff rental and to help re-sign chara and bergy.
Dave’s point is right on, how do we know if the Bruins ever did actively shop Savard? My sense of it is that this was very much a media creation.
However, at the end of the day Bruins management has the responsibility to its fans to put together the best team possible. If that involves trading someone, anyone, then that’s what they’ll do.
One other point, Peter C seems to have a touch of Theo Epstein in him such that you never hear about his trades until they are done. Nathan Horton, Seidenberg, Paille none of those deals hit the media until they were finished. Leads me to think that all of the talk about Savard is just that, talk.
He was never really shopped to begin with. Guys like Bruce Garrioch ( who’s “sources” have never been right to my recollection) make up rumours about players all summer, then track them down and want their feelings on it? Niether the Bruins, nor Peter Chiarelli hurt Savards feelings, if they are hurt, Bruce Garrioch and the rest did. EVERY player on EVERY team has been talked about in trade proposal. A GM would not be doing his job if he didn’t listen to offers, even on players that just signed a reasonable extension.
Again, I do not believe Marc Savard was actively shopped by the Bruins, other team would have persued him because of the depth at centre.
Grow up Eric. It was the team not Marc that collapsed in game 7.
I hope Savard stays with the Bruins. He is my favorite player, fun to watch, funny off the ice and a great leader. We gotta keep him.
I agree with Jim. Don’t blow this too many on the ice thing way out of proportion. He made a mistake and he did not own up to it. Happens all the time. Its not only Savard that will not own up to his mistakes. A lot of people are like that.
I think he should be on this team next season. To trade him instead of just putting Ryder in the minors is really stupid, though I would take Kaberle for him. He has played very hard while he has been here and I respect that. And he came here when the Bruins completely sucked and I respect him for that. But, spare me how his feelings are. Suck it up and prove why you should be here instead of complaining. I couldn’t care less how he feels. Ask him how he thinks it felt to watch him screw the pooch on that line change. His feelings are hurt? Are you serious? Suck it up. He is getting paid over 4 million dollars to play for the Bruins. Expect to have your feelings hurt more this season if you play like a dog.
I expect him to come back strong off of the concussion like Bergeron did and, like I said, I hope he does. But he can get lost if he is going to bitch and moan all season. There is no place for that and it is that attitude that will only empower Neely to get rid of this guy, because, make no mistake about it, Neely is driving this anti-Savard sentiment in the org.
I can’t say that I blame him for his feelings. But pro sports is a tough world so he is going to have to put this behind him. The best thing he can do is come back, play great and prove the naysayers wrong. I for one would like to see the Bruins keep him in the fold. I like what he can bring to a team.
This too many men on the ice thing has been blown all out of proportion, let it go.
It’s hard to imagine a Bruins team sans Savy; especially if he were to get traded to someone in the division.
If he is reading on this site he will. He is not my favorite player on the team, but I really love to watch him in the game, and he’s usually pretty smooth off the ice too. I hope he retires a Bruin.
I hope Marc is back with a chip on his shoulder. I think its the best offseason move that PC has made, not to trade him. Let Seguin prove himself before we up and trade savard.
Suck it up Savard and deal with it. You are the one that threw your teammate under the bus after you caused the too-many-man on the ice penalty in game 7 against the Flyers.
Savard was injured a lot last season. The Bruins have too many centers and Savard is the oldest of their centers. Keepeing Savard for a year or 2 is a good idea, but keeping him for is whole contract isn’t a good idea. Seguin will be the top center on this team in 2 to 3 years. Bergeron & Krejci are better all-around centers than Savard and much younger. Savard should be gone in a season or 2
I hope Marc knows that there are still fans in Boston who love him and are really looking forward to seeing him again this fall. He really didn’t deserve the treatment he got this summer. imo
It’ll be in the paper edition on the 15th.
Why does it say “15 Aug 10″, it is the 14th.
