BOSTON — In his first game action since offseason hip surgery tonight at TD Garden, Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas just wanted to make sure he could physically withstand the challenges that come with an NHL contest.

And despite a 4-1 loss to Washington, he pretty much accomplished what he needed to while going the full 60 minutes.

Head coach Claude Julien gave Thomas a passing grade.

“I thought definitely it’s a 4-1 loss, but Timmy’s definitely not the guy that is to blame for that,” said the coach. “I thought for his first game back he was pretty good. He challenged the puck well and some of the goals they had, I don’t think he had much help on. So I’m happy with his game.”
