Horton

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Six NHL seasons came and went with Nathan Horton in a Florida Panthers sweater and the playoffs starting without South Florida’s entry in the league participating.

Now that trend might finally end for Horton, who got a head start on his drive to compete in postseason play by taking part in the Bruins’ first captains’ practice of the 2010-11 season some 10 days before the official opening of training camp.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Thirteen skaters and two goaltenders took the ice at Ristuccia Arena this morning for the Bruins’ first captains’ practice of the 2010-11 season.

Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton were among the big names in the mix.

Stuart

WILMINGTON, Mass. — When we last saw Mark Stuart, he wasn’t quite himself during Boston’s playoff ouster against Philadelphia. He was still on antibiotics for his hand infection and couldn’t quite catch up to the speed of Stanley Cup playoff hockey after rejoining the team mid-series.

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Before more than a dozen Bruins players took the Ristuccia Arena ice this morning for the first captains’ practice of the 2010-11 season, goaltending coach Bob Essensa had his pupils on the ice for some work along with some rookie shooters.

Among the group of netminders was veteran Tim Thomas, who is working his way back from offseason hip surgery.

Regardless of how much of the Bruins’ 2010 playoff success through nine postseason games you credited to David Krejci, you have to admit that some semblance of complacency also caused the club’s collapse in the aftermath of the center’s season-ending injury.

So the “summer of Savard” has finally ended.

And for the Bruins and their fans, it couldn’t have had a happier ending, with general manager Peter Chiarelli acknowledging that he won’t be trading Marc Savard and expects the star center to arrive at camp next week in an effort to return to his pre-concussion form.

Smith

Agent Ben Hankinson announced via his Twitter feed that the Bruins have signed his client, Wyatt Smith, to make up for the injury to veteran center Trent Whitfield.

Savard/By S. Bradley

While the world awaits the announcement of the NHL’s decision about Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract Friday night, there is still the matter of the investigation into the deals of four other prominent players, including Bruins center Marc Savard, to be dealt with.

It came to light shortly after the NHL rejected the first Kovalchuk deal that the league was also looking into the long-term deals of Savard, Marian Hossa, Roberto Luongo and Chris Pronger for any signs of circumvention of the salary cap.

While the one trophy that he most covets continues to elude him, Bruins President Cam Neely keeps acquiring awards even in retirement.

Neely, still in search of his first Stanley Cup, was announced today as one of four recipients of the 2010 Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the U.S.
