Earlier in the Bruins’ road trip to Belfast and Prague, captain Zdeno Chara expressed a desire to get a contract extension done before the regular season starts.
Fellow would-be unrestricted free agent Patrice Bergeron, however, doesn’t sound concerned about setting a similar deadline.
Bergeron, who like Chara is entering the last season of his contract with the Bruins, was speaking from Prague as part of a team-organized conference call this morning. When training camp opened, Bergeron was taking a wait-and-see approach to the talks and said that he wasn’t going to stop them from carrying over into the season unless they turned into a distraction.
Today he was pretty much sticking to that same strategy.
“I haven’t really thought about it yet, to be honest with you. For now, we’ll see,” said Bergeron. “Again, the season hasn’t started yet and I’m trying to get ready for this season, looking forward to this season. So I’m not really worried about the extension or about next year, I’m worried about this year right now. And this is the priority for me and the whole team. So I’ll take it a day at a game, a game at a time and see and go from there.”
