BOSTON — Shawn Thornton continued tonight to prove why he’s worth every penny the Bruins have paid him since he departing Anaheim for Boston in 2007.
With the Bruins down, 2-0, a little past the midway point of the first period, Thornton made a bee line for the biggest, baddest mother on the ice — New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard, who casts a mighty shadow with his 6-foot-7, 265-pound frame.
“Yeah, I was trying to get the boys going,” said Thornton, who surpassed the 500-PIM mark for his career in the Bruins’ 3-2 loss. “I mean, I think we did a pretty good job of turning it around. I think a couple of bounces went their way at the start. I think from myself and [Milan Lucic] getting into them, I think the guys did a pretty good job of battling pretty hard.”
To Thornton’s point, the Bruins outscored the Rangers, 2-1, after he fought Boogaard and Lucic threw down with Brandon Prust. Earlier in the game, Mark Stuart fought Sean Avery in the night’s opening bout.
Here’s a look at how Thornton handled himself against Boogaard:
“Does that surprise you?” Thornton responded when asked about it being a tactical fight. “I mean, he’s arguably the toughest guy in the league. There is no doubt about it, he is a big man. He’s got 6 inches and 60 pounds. I usually try and fight smart anyways, but I guess you have to be a bit more careful with a guy like that.”

Thornton has fought just about every tough guy in the league at some time or an other including Boogard so it was little surprise to see him don his job and earn his pay. for to long the Bruins have lacked toughness and had a 4th line of rookies, under-performing euros and penalty killers. Doesn’t hurt them at all to have somone like Tornton on the bench every night
I love Thornton, and he plays his 4th line role better than most. However, I often wish CJ would shorten up the bench, especially when the team is down by a goal in the 3rd.
Pierre,
You have just state why the New York Rangers should keep Sather on for the rest of his life. Much like the Canadiens trade for an overpriced contract and then their best goalie, Sather will hand contracts like the Yankees do because he used to be able to. Too bad he forgot about the cap. Go Sather! Keep screwing the Rangers Until you die!! The rest of the country thanks you heartily for it.
Thornton is a leader on the ice and always gives his all. I remember last season when the 4th line seemed like the only one that really showed up for some of the games. And last night he proved that his commitment to the team and winning cannot be questioned. When I saw him take on Boogaard I was both a bit surprised and a bit worried. The size difference was not a minor one, but Thorty held his own and I think he inspired the fans as much as his teammates. He is an important part of this team on and off the ice.
Thornton – 2 year contract extension @ $812,500 per.
Boogaard- 4 years @ 1.625 MILLION per.
Thornton’s season stats- TOI 10:00, 18 hits, 14 shots, 1 goal
BoogeyMan’s season stats- TOI 3:29, 3 hits, 1 shot, 1 assist
Who would you rather have? Boogey man does half as much and makes twice as much. And we thought the Ference contract was dumb…wow.
