Ryder/By S. Bradley
The big number around the Bruins right now isn’t the number of wins they accumulate, Tim Thomas’ save count or even the level of discomfort Johnny Boychuk is feeling in his arm as he attempts to return to the lineup tonight in New York.
All anyone wants to know as far as numerals are concerned is: how much salary do the Bruins need to cut from their cap in order to fit Marc Savard and Marco Sturm in when the pair of forwards returns from injury?
Well, thanks to the great Web site CapGeek.com, we at least have a ballpark figure. Through an enormous amount of work, CapGeek.com compiles a profile page for each team, which features how much each club has spent to date, how much a team spends each day and how much room a team has. According to the CapGeek.com, the daily salary cap is $309,894 and the Bruins are spending $336,258 by using their Long Term Injured Reserve exemptions for Sturm and Savard.
According to CapGeek.com, as explained on the site’s Twitter feed, you project that overage over the course of the full season and you come to a total around $4.9 million that the Bruins have to clear for Savard and Sturm.
Of course, this number could change depending on how much longer they take to get back.
But when people like head coach Claude Julien ask why Michael Ryder’s name keeps coming up in terms of making cap cuts, there’s you’re answer. If you have to cut close to $5 million in cap space, it’s a lot easier to slice $4 million off with just one player than to jettison three or four guys. Is Ryder playing well? Sure. But he’s not exactly ripping it up — he’s not even scoring at a Brian Boyle-sized pace — and he could be expendable if the Bruins’ offense is going to receive the benefit of a fully-healthy, totally-productive Sturm and Savard.
If the Bruins trade or re-assign Ryder, that would leave pretty much just one more move — depending on the player — to clear the required cap space. Just for example, assigning Jordan Caron to Providence could get the Bruins pretty close; trading Matt Hunwick would get it done.
Basically, those worrying that the Bruins might find themselves in a Chicago Blackhawks-like situation, where they have to trade a third of the team, seem to have reason to calm down. Sure, this will still be a difficult decision for Chiarelli, but when you look at what the Bruins will gain and what they’ll lose, it’s a situation that should finish with them in a better position production- and performance-wise.

I’ve said this from the beginning, and I still think its the best option. Get Savard back in the lineup, and bury Sturm in Providence for the year. That leaves a pretty small number to clear, and that could be rectified pretty easily by moving just Wheeler for a pick. Of course, if there is a DMan in Providence that can make the jump, they could also consider jettisoning Hunwick and Paille instead.
Seems a lot was made of a pretty small matter.
Anyone have a Suave update in Providence? Is he hurt badly?
I agree with Mick. I know Sturm is “driven” by his hungry for a cup, but I don’t know how driven he can be on a pair of knees that have been surgically repaired 3 times in the last two year. I would want to put him in the AHL for a rehab stint to make sure he still has some NHL game before we risk loosing someone putting them on reentry waivers or trading or cutting someone. I would hate to loose a roster player and then find out Sturms glass knees can’t take it.
Seguin should move to the top line for tonights game between Lucic and Horton. Remember he was on the third line in his OHL team and then was moved to first line and lit it up! Why not try it? At least a period or two.
Keep Ryder, he’s playing for a contract. He’s using the body and playing good hockey.
Sturm also has to play for a contract… but he has bad knees! So let him prove he still has it in Providence at least until the playoffs when the cap means nothing. Or trade deadline when a team needs some scoring.
Demote Paille and Hunwick. or package all of them for picks or prospects. Not worth commenting.
Wheeler is playing good hockey. He has to stay. It’s only a year and if he’s steady then he might be a good trade deadline guy or a surprise scorer.
When Krejci comes back put Bergy Rex and Seguin back together. With Ryder, Wheeler and Caron on the third line.
When Savard comes back … Marchand and Caron can fight it out for fourth line time. With Savard centering Ryder and Wheeler.
Any way you look at it. Good times are coming when the team is healthy again!
I too think that Sturm should start in PVD. Let’s see what he has in the tank before we have to irrevocably demote people.
I am not a fan of Paille, Hunwick or Ryder. I would trade all three today for draft picks just to clear space. To me, Paille would net next to nothing and would not be claimed as he is moved from PVD back up, if necessary. Hunwick still has the air of value, so if he was paired with Ryder and maybe a draft pick, the Bruins could get a cheaper player in return. Maybe. Otherwise, they are stuck with Hunwick.
Going back to my first point, it seems to me Ryder and Sturm are competing against each other for a roster spot.
I would leave Caron alone. He may not be scoring in bunches, but he is playing sound hockey right now. What seems clear is that Seguin should move to the wing as soon as Krecji comes back. Perhaps he skates with Bergeron and Caron. I just want Seguin away from Ryder. Seguin needs to be surrounded by high effort level guys.
In addition to ALL of this, Wheeler is a trade possibility, but he has picked up his play of late. I think they trade him at the deadline anyways.
Ryder has certainly made this a tough call. Statistically, he’s off to one of the best starts of his career and looks to be a 25+ goal scorer again. All this while getting third line minutes as well. As mentioned above, he’s overpaid but that’s not his fault. It does make him hard to move, but a scoring and cap retarded team like Calgary may bite. Who knows?
I try to like Hunwick but he’s simply not an NHL player. Especially not an NHL winger. Those thoughts are ridiculous to me. I think I said this yesterday but an offensive D-man in your 5/6 slot is a waste. Not to mention he isn’t even being offensive (3 pts in 15 games) and lost his PP job to forwards. That was the one place I liked him and felt it worth dressing him on a gamely basis.
Sturm I don’t think will be doing a Prov. conditioning stint, unless it’s a surefire way to buy time on the cap which I don’t see it being. Marco’s a perennial 20 goal guy. I don’t think a wonky knee is going to change that. Goal-scorers are goal-scorers. And if he re-injures it? Back on IR he goes and we win either way. Paille will definitely be waivered when he returns.
Wheeler is the best option to ship out. Sure he’s rounding out his game right now but, like Ryder, if he’s not scoring he’s really not doing much for you. We know this, yet his value around the league doesn’t seem to reflect it so I think we should take advantage before it does.
Sturm in Prov for sure, at least a few weeks, but maybe the full year…pending a trade.
the additional money will have to come from Hunwick or Paille. Can’t see Hunwick going to forward.
get paille and sturm an apartment and some bunk beds down in providence until the playoffs start.
2 other ideas…
wheels – keep at center
hunwick – move up to wing to create competition between him, ryder, caron and segzy (shift to wing when krejci returns)
Ryder might get nabbed on waivers too should be sent down, probably a more likely scenario given other GM’s know PC is over a barrel.
Paille should definitely be the other odd man out over Caron, although Caron wouldn’t be subject to waivers should the B’s need to recall someone down the line. Marchand would be waiver exempt too (although not sure he’d clear enough $ to make a difference)
Tough decisions for sure, but like Matt says, no reason to worry too much.
I wouldn’t trade Hunwick he is starting to turn it on again and he isn’t an older guy. Ryder is a guy you know your going to get inconsistency, Hunwick might have had the feared sophomore slump
Just posing an unrelated question…is it me or has Lucic lost a little of his physical edge? He’s playing good hockey, no question…just doesn’t seem himself. Also, he is 7th on the team in PIM, behind even Horton who was supposed to be timid (according to the press before his trade…we know that isn’t true!)
People actually SUPPORTING Ryder??? When did this start? I feel confused, I though he was the worst thing to happen to hockey since Montreal won the Stanley Cup? It would definitely behoove PC to start Sturm off in Providence. He may not like it (Sturm) but he has had 2 very serious knee injurys…one more tap and he could be done. His age won’t help at this stage. I am guessing he is only counting on 1 or 2 more years before he’s done in any case. Ryder has been playing well, and to drop him in favour of an unproven Sturm seems a little premature. Yes, Ryder is overpaid…not his fault. He is in the top 3 in scoring (tied), third in goals scored, so come on. Sturm could be, and should be, given a ‘conditioning assignment’ in Providence where he can try out his knoee against a less skilled, slower group of pros. Then he and Chiarelli can see how he responds.
I think if they demote Paille when Krejci comes back, he is gone.
The problem with reassigning someone is that if they do well in the AHL, they have to stay there.
Someone will take a gamble on Sturm or Ryder for only 2+million if they light up the AHL. Boston can not pull them back up.
So the demotion would be for the entire season.
I would much rather see them trade at 50 cents on the dollar then kill Sturm or Ryder’s season.
Remember, they still have a TON of picks. Unless the miss on most of them, where are they going to play?
Ryder/Sturm, Hamill, Their own first, That should get something. Add a defenseman if we are getting one back and we have a really good team!
I would keep Ryder and re-assign Sturm ($3.5m) – who knows how well that knee will hold up. And then get rid of Hunwick and Paille. McQuiad is better than Hunwick and Hunwick is 1.4 mil. There is your $4.9m. Paille will probably be gone when Krecji comes back…. or at least when Savard comes back.

Re-assign Ryder. Cut Paille. Done. You can mail me P.C.’s paycheck for this week. Thanks.
