Video: Campbell plans to sit down with Savard at some point
NHL Senior Executive VP of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell was interviewed on NHL Overtime on VS over the phone last night.
He was asked about numerous topics, including the recent unearthing of emails in which — among other things — he criticizes Bruins center Marc Savard as a diver.
While Campbell was unapologetic and even said that when he wrote those emails he didn’t realize they “could be retrieved” for use in a court case or anything else, he also responded the following way to a question from former Bruins defenseman Aaron Ward about apologizing to Savard:
“At some point and time I’ll sit down with Marc Savard,” he said.
After explaining that he once coached Savard with the New York Rangers and that when he was fired, Savard was sent to the minors, Campbell then said: “I don’t think it’s an apology. I think it’s an explanation we have to talk about.”
Here’s the full video, with the Savard talk starting about 1:40 in:
Credit goes to the VS crew for actually broaching the subject and not pulling any punches. And, of course, credit to Campbell to missing the point. He thinks it’s ludicrous that anyone is drawing the conclusion that because he called Savard a faker three years ago, he thought Savard was faking after the Matt Cooke hit last spring. Who are these people, Colin? No one in their right mind is saying that. What people are asking is if you have these strong opinions, positive and negative, how can you possibly rule in an unbiased fashion on punishment when these players are involved on either side of incident?
We might never get that answer. All we’ll get is seemingly a lifetime more of Campbell’s dartboard justice from behind the curtain of secrecy that the NHL operations department works behind.

Colin Campbell was on NHL Live this afternoon and could barely complete a sentence. It was mind-numbingly painful to watch. They weren’t even asking him that tough of questions, yet he was stuttering and fumbling through every half-baked, half-assed answer. It was as if his attorney was bedside, warning him to choose his words carefully. We all realize that Campbell has always been a sorry excuse for an NHL exec, but in watching his (and the league’s) pathetic response to this scandal, I think its fair to question what kind of person he really is if he can’t even own up to his wrongdoing. Colin, do us all a favor, and fall on your sword. Its a damn shame that Bettman & co. are still in charge during what promises to be another great era for the sport itself.
He has no regrets about what he has done or said. Even if he is a hockey dad, he has a position with the league and is in a position of influence over the refs. He talks about the quality and unbiased actionsof the refs and how they are trained to be impartial, yet he has advocated a ref be fired because he disagreed with that officials calls and the timing of the calls. I do not recall there being a rule in the book that says officals shall not make calls when a team is losing late in the game especially at home. A ref’s call or lack thereof should not influence the outcome of a game. It is the player’s lack of discipline that results in the penalty that possibly determines the outcome of a game. And a penalty is a penalty is a penalty at 0:01 of the first period as much as it is at 17:59 or 19:59 of the third period. Colin Campbell appears to speak with a forked tongue.
Boy his answers are weak. It seems that his only regrets are that his e-mails were exposed, not that they were written. It leaves one to question what else is there to know?
I hope that the press doesn’t allow this to fade away.
Colon Campbell is the biggest douche! If i were Savy I would tell him to go fuck himself when they sit down to discuss.
Sorry, he was on “On the Fly”, not “Power Play” last night on the NHL Network.
Yeah, he was on the NHL Network’s Power Play last night too. Pretty much the same exact thing, except the NHL Network wouldn’t dare to ask any pressing questions of him. That wouldn’t be ” towing the company line”, ya know?
