Here’s one you probably didn’t expect to read this morning.
In his Colorado debut last night after being traded by the Bruins, defenseman Matt Hunwick tied for the team lead in hits.
The Avalanche lost in overtime at home to Atlanta, 3-2, in their first game since acquiring Hunwick. Coincidentally, Hunwick’s last two games have now been losses to Thrashers. And no, he did not rematch with the gloves of with Atlanta’s Evander Kane.
Hunwick recorded five hits in 16:52 of ice time skating on an even-strength pair with Ryan Wilson. He also logged 1:19 of power-play time.
A Michigan native, it must pain Hunwick at least a bit to pull on an Avs sweater considering the battles that franchise has had with his hometown Detroit Red Wings over the years. However, he told the Denver Post he’s excited for the fresh start.
“Style of play and there’s a great nucleus here, plus the tradition,” he said before the game. “It’s a first-class organization and I think anyone would be proud to put on this jersey.”
Hunwick was a minus-1 with no points and two shots on goal. The offensive numbers will probably pick up as he becomes entrenched in Colorado’s higher-tempo style. But the Avs better not expect too many repeat five-hit performances from Hunwick.
