Sauve/Courtest P-Bruins

It took one game to tune up before Max Sauve added some drama to his return from injury for the Providence Bruins over the weekend.

Sauve’s heroics couldn’t have come at a better time because he made sure the P-Bruins salvaged something from an otherwise dismal trio of games.

Sauve, out since Oct. 16 with a broken wrist, returned to the lineup Friday night and was minus-1 with no points in a 5-1 loss to Portland. But Saturday night, he capped Providence’s wild rally from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Sauve scored the game-winner with just three seconds left — his first goal since a hat trick in the season’s second game.

The P-Bruins scored three times in the final 9:53 to leave Springfield with two points. However, the Falcons exacted their revenge Sunday with a 4-1 win at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Sauve was point-less in that game but posted a plus-1 rating.

Providence is still in last place in the Atlantic Division with just 25 points. Going forward, there’s no doubt Sauve’s speed and hands will benefit a P-Bruins squad that ranks 26th in goals for per game at 2.50 goals per outing.

Who’s hot

Jordan Caron’s first stint in Providence this season started out well for him, as he recorded an assist in each of his first two games. He was minus-2 in his first game but finished the weekend just minus-1. … Defenseman Jeff Penner broke a six-game point-less streak Saturday and recorded his first multi-point game since Nov. 19 in that game. Despite a minus-2 on the weekend, Penner is still plus-5 for the season. … Goaltender Nolan Schaefer snapped a personal four-game losing streak with 26 saves Saturday. He then lost Sunday.

Who’s not

Juaraj Simek was point-less and a minus-2 in his first three games with the P-Bruins after coming over in a trade from Norfolk. He is now point-less in his last seven games. … Defenseman Sean Zimmerman made his P-Bruins debut Saturday after coming over from Rochester. He was minus-2 over two games and is still looking for his first point of the season. … Zach Hamill is still point-less in six December games. He even spent some time shifted out to wing from center.

Injury update

After Sauve returned Friday, Jeremy Reich returned from his foot injury Sunday. … Colby Cohen remained out with an upper-body injury. … Trent Whitfield might start practicing this weekend. He has missed the entire season so far after tearing his Achilles in August.
