According to reports, Bruins forward Milan Lucic will meet his day of reckoning Sunday, Boxing Day, with the NHL over his sucker-punch of Atlanta defenseman Freddy Meyer in Thursday night’s third-period melee.
Lucic was assessed a match penalty, which carries with it an automatic suspension pending review. I would expect Lucic to receive a one-game ban based on his status as a repeat offender (he was suspended in the ’09 playoffs vs. Montreal). It’ll be interesting to see if the league does anything about Meyer’s high hit, which started the whole thing.

I blame the refs for not separating them better. What would you expect him to do? They were holding them right next to each other! Sucker punch(deserved) flop by meyer and it was all started by a perfect example of a cheap shot, if the league is really serious about getting rid of cheap shots then I expect they will match one game suspensions. But then again this is the same league who shrugged their shoulders after the Cooke hit.
[...] Defenseman Andrew Ference was the first guy to punch Meyer in the face, beating Lucic to it, but in the end, Lucic may be facing a suspension. [...]
Lucic should have bitshed slapped him. At the hearing he should discuss precedent, like Aaron Ward’s punch in the face two years ago in the playoffs!
meyer made every hab fan proud with that dive.
take the one game suspension…it was worth it….last nights came against Atlants was fantastic…and can someone please tell me why Shawn Thornton is not atleast wearing an “A” on his sweater…he is the true leader of this team

I applaud Lucic for smoking Meyer, he had it coming with his high hit on Lucic… It was good to see…
Yeah, it was a sucker punch, but it’s effect was embellished quite a bit, IMO. You could tell that Looch didn’t put all that much behind it and Meyer folded like he was one of Milbury’s suits, but amazingly, got up pretty quick and didn’t really seem to have any lingering ill effects from it. I’d like to think that this will be a wash, as I stated in an earlier post, but I think the repeat offender bit will be the major sticking point here, which is unfortunate for Looch and the B’s.
With that being said, if given the chance, I wouldn’t and I don’t think anyone in the Bruins organization would change anything about the incident. This has the chance of being a major turning and building point for this team, in regards to overall team cohesiveness.
