It’s rare to have a landslide in any election these days.
But with his one-man performance against Atlanta this week, Shawn Thornton pretty much guaranteed he was going to run away with the Bruin of the Week poll victory.

Thornton dropped the gloves just two seconds into the game Thursday night — a move to rile up his teammates, which was expected considering his history. However, what wasn’t expected was his first two-goal performance since February 2008 in Boston’s 4-1 win over the Thrashers. It was just a two-game week for the Bruins, who did little worthy of notice in their other game (a 3-0 loss to Anaheim).
Both of Thornton’s goals were sniper-worthy:
With his two goals. Thornton ran his season’s total to seven, which is a new career high. He also has eight fighting majors — each one more important than the next to lift this team’s spirits and send a message that every Bruins player will be protected against illegal hits.
“Well, he’s getting a lot of credit tonight,” head coach Claude Julien said about Thornton after Thursday’s game, “and rightfully so. I mean he stood there at the beginning of the game and made sure that everybody knew we were ready to play. You know, he got rewarded with those goals and those goals he earned as well. They weren’t lucky ones, they were real good goals and played a real good game for us tonight.”
A good game turned an otherwise-bleak week into a solid one. At this rate, Thornton could have 15 goals and 15 fights by the end of the season. That would certainly secure his place in Bruins’ folklore. But for now, it’s just about winning games.
