Bruins & Stars rumbled/By S. Bradley
BOSTON — Does it really take three fights in four seconds to get the Bruins off to a flying start?
Well, it doesn’t hurt. Or yes it does, but it also helps.
Sparked by fighting majors from Gregory Campbell, Shawn Thornton and Adam McQuaid in the first four seconds of tonight’s game against Dallas, the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period en route to a 6-3 victory.
“Well, it certainly helped get everybody into the game, and the crowd into the game, that’s for sure,” said defenseman Johnny Boychuk.
Before the first period was over, Andrew Ference added another fighting major. More importantly, Patrice Bergeron scored twice and Milan Lucic and Shawn Thornton both added a goal in the game’s first 16:01.
Here’s a look at the rest of the box score:
•Tuukka Rask, making his first start since Jan. 20 (four games), stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn the win.
•Former Bruins goaltender Andrew Raycroft, who was traded for Rask five years ago, didn’t fare as well. He was pulled after 1:20 of ice time after he allowed goals on his first two shots faced.
•Twelve difference Bruins players registered at least one point, led by Mark Recchi (three assists) and Patrice Bergeron (two goals, one assist).
•Brad Marchand was plus-3.
A game like this goes a long way in proving to themselves and the fans that they can win any game, any night, any style. Sure was fun to watch….too bad it wasn’t the Pens or Habs.
If it stays around, there could be some special things going on. This is the way they need to play all of the time. And then raise it 4 more notches in mid-April
I was worried that they were gassed as the third progressed, but they figured it out. Great win and it was nice to see the big and bad back, lets see if it stays around a bit.
The only bad thing last night was Tuuka’s play in the 3rd. Other than that, game was fantastic. I don’t know why they can’t play with such intensity all of the time.
