CapGeek.com clears up the Savard cap-space issue
With the expected announcement that Marc Savard will be placed on LTIR by the Bruins and be lost for the season less than an hour away, many Bruins fans are already plotting the team’s attempts to replace their top-line center.
CapGeek.com today Tweeted the following message to clear up any questions people have about the salary cap and how much room placing Savard on LTIR will give the Bruins:
If the Bruins put Marc Savard on LTIR, they’d be able to add a cap hit of approximately $4 million. That might sound great, but this situation puts the Bruins at high risk of incurring a bonus overage that will carry into 2011-12. Those bonus overages are really going to sting teams because the 7.5 percent cushion is gone in 2011-12.
The 7.5 percent cushion is how much over the cap the team can be including potential performance bonuses, which only count hard against the cap once they are achieved. Right now, the Bruins have Tyler Seguin, Mark Recchi and Steven Kampfer on deals that include performance bonuses.
So if the Bruins use the full $4 million to add a replacement, they will almost definitely incur a penalty next season.
[...] thought, you’d think the Bruins now have $4 Million to spend now. However, after reading Matt Kalman’s article it has made things a little more difficult on the mind. If you click on the article you’ll [...]
Indeed DCL. What Wheeler’s doing on the PP when Marchand is on the bench split from Bergy & Recchi, one of the most productive line in the NHL since Jan 1st?…
Bruins should go after Brad richards! Power play is gonna be huge down the strwetch and into the playoffs. They need a strong puck distributer on the pp.
Does anyone agree withme on the notion that Julien keeps putting the same guys out on the pp, even when they go 0-for # time after time? Get Wheelert off the PP alreadY!!!!
All things considered – I’d like to see them address the wing at the deadline and leave fiddling with the D (the best D in the league mind you) til the off-season.
This off-season will be an interesting one to say the least. I really think the Bs are getting stiffed with this concussion business. How on earth can they plan for the cap, when NO ONE has any idea what is to come from Savard who has a 4mil cap number?
Think about it – they try to improve the team thinking they can’t count on Savard… so they go after Richards at a pretty hefty sum. Then somewhere in Jan/Feb 2012, Savard is ready to come back. Yeesh – $4mil is a ton to shave off – so are they stuck with another Sturm trade? This is BS – and the NHL needs to deal with how concussions affect teams planning b/c unlike knee injuries and everything else – there is absolutely no certainty to anything head related.
True Bo, -105 is a scary stat, but I can see how they could pile up in his career of playing for some pretty weak teams. It’s probably not likely, but I wonder if he’d do well on a contender.

Boise B – Dunno about Brewer – Lifetime -105. Yikes.
I’m gonna piggyback on Bojangles comment and suggest they consider making a run for Dustin Penner and Kurtis Foster from Edmonton, provided the asking price is not too high. Not only would they help out the Bruins where they need it, but they would add some physical size to the lineup entering the play offs.
Aquiring Eric Brewer from St. Louis would also have the same effect.
Dustin Penner?
Is Carl Soderberg completely out of the picture at this point?
Matt, i was wondering what youd think about the bruins making a move for a free agent to fill in during savards absence like they did last year with satan. he might be old but robert lang has some sniper ability still left in the tank and i cant see him hurting the cap being that hes a free agent. hes only 2 years removed from an 18 goal year with montreal (in only 50 games) and is an overall plus player. could be nice to have another veteran on the team as well
