Seguin/By S. Bradley
Many have been campaigning in recent days for the Bruins to utilize the same loophole Los Angeles used earlier this season with Brayden Schenn to send rookie Tyler Seguin to the Providence (AHL) farm club on a conditioning assignment.
By this comments during his weekly appearance on the Toucher & Rich Show on 98.5 The Sports Hub, however, general manager Peter Chiarelli doesn’t sound like a guy looking to use that loophole.
“It’s certainly a good idea in general,” the GM said. “He’d have to be injured or sick to go down there. So that’s unlikely.”
The topic has been raised because it’s likely Seguin will be a healthy scratch tonight against Montreal at TD Garden after the recall of Jordan Caron from the P-Bruins. Seguin’s ice time has slipped over the course of the last four games, as he has played 9:26 or less each night.
The agreement between the NHL and CHL requires the Bruins to return to Seguin to his junior team if he’s not going to be on the NHL roster because of his age. The Kings are considered the first team to utilize their AHL affiliate to postpone a decision on whether to send a play back to junior of keep him when they lent Schenn to their Manchester (AHL) club.
Maybe Chiarelli was playing coy, but you have to hope the organization is at least contemplating this type of forward thinking, which would benefit the development of one of their prized players without weakening their NHL product.

I agree that Seguin needs to be a lot more physical, especially on zone entries — and I’m sure Claude hates all the turnovers he creates in that area. You can see the flashes, but there’s not as much space to maneuver in the NHL as there was in the OHL and I think that’s what he’s having the biggest problem with.
But, yeah. Claude hasn’t given him a chance at all. He’s averaging 12 minutes a game where other guys his age (Hall in particular) are getting 18+. So, I can’t put all the blame on Seggy for not developing. Even when Eric Staal was stinking it up his freshman year (11 G, 20 A, 31 pts) he still got 16:40 a contest.
Especially considering how poorly Savard was playing, there’s no excuse for Seguin to be given as little ice time as he has.
He does need to get more physical but, come on, this team is in great position and can afford to give a promising rookie 2 more minutes a game.
Truth is absolutely right about hammill over seguin, it helps nobody. they say they’ve been patient with him but they change his line and position every damn week. if underperformance is an issue it is larger one for krejci and horton than it is for an 18 year old kid whose coach has never shown any faith in him at all.
does this remind anyone else of the way julien clashed with kessel?
Skinner doesn’t hit, Hall doesn’t hit, Couture doesn’t go out and look to hit but they all do get great ice time don’t they ?
Chiarelli listens way too much to Julien for my taste Whitfield!? Claude is the one who needs to listen more to Neely and PC or he needs to go next year.

I agree his favorite move is to hit the blue line and shoot. Scary thing is all year i haven’t seen on goalie make a clean save off of it. His shot is so powerful even from that distance the goalie cant glove it and they just have to redirect it. A move here or there and get to the tops of the circles in a little more and those will start to be nasty goals. When he figures out his niche he will be scary, but I don’t think playing Hamill over him helps anyone.
JSC … completey agree with your observation. He does shy away from contact, leaves the puck to avoid a hit instead of protecting it and bracing. Stuff he’ll learn he needs to do, exactly why an AHL stint would be good for him. More minutes and more responsibility would let him get used to playing with pros.
My only complaint with Seguin is that he shys away from contact, almost to the point that it hinders his game. He’s young, obviously, and not as strong as he will be in a few years but I noticed that every time he rushes into the offensive zone with the puck, staring down two opposing players, instead of attempting to make a move to beat them or hold up, take a bump and look for a pass, he wrists its from the top of the circles at the goalies chest before he can be touched. Honestly, I think the kid needs to get hit and soon. I don’t think he’s really been popped yet, and you can’t say the same for a lot of other rookies around the league.
I don’t like this. I don’t think he should be a scratch and I don’t think he should be sent down. I would rather have him than Wheeler.
does trent whitfield come back up if segzy is sent down?
