Cooke
Although the handful of Bruins players I tried to talk to about it either hadn’t seen the play or declined to comment, Matt Cooke made it back into the news cycle with his actions for Pittsburgh last night.
This time the irritating Penguins forward who knocked Bruins center Marc Savard into near-retirement last spring victimized Columbus defenseman Fedor Tyutin with a hit from behind.
For his efforts, Cooke was handed a four-game suspension today. Now a Bruins fan reading this might say “hey, that’s nothing. That’s the same length suspension Daniel Paille, a first-time offender, got for his hit on Raymond Sawada last week.” Well, technically you’re right and can consider that Cooke got off easy. Cooke, after all, has been suspended twice previously since joining the Penguins in ’08.
But when you consider the dirty plays Cooke has executed over the years and gotten off scot-free for, four games is better than nothing. When even Jeremy Roenick is calling Cooke “chickenshit” and criticizing the play, you know some sort of discipline is in order. Of course, there are always going to be those that say Tyutin put himself in a vulnerable position and is much at fault as Cooke, but when you watch the reverse angle replay and see that Cooke had a solid two to three seconds of looking at Tyutin’s name and number on the back of his jersey, you know he was making a targeted run at the player with intent to injure. Had he made a different play, he might’ve even been able to steal the puck.
We know, though, that it’s never about playing the puck or respecting players on the other team for Cooke. While the folks at HBO, who were rightfully lauded for most of their efforts with the 24/7 show, might want to sell us on Cooke as the wholesome family man with a son that wears a matching suit and puts gum in his buddy’s gloves, we’ve all seen his actions on the ice. And we know that even if he is the All-Canadian dad away from the rink, his on-ice alter-ego is just pure evil and he might wind up doing something worse than he did to Savard to someone else down the road if he’s not put in his place.
Four games probably isn’t enough to change Cooke, but at least it’s a start.

J.R better watch out. I hear Cooke wanted a piece of 70 year old Cherry. Don isn’t a complete dinosaur. He knows an A-hole when he sees one. Guys like Cooke/Avery finally wear out their own players welcome. You can be cruising through a no-hitter in the middle of January and wham you’ve got a line brawl. I know I’d get tired of playing with him. He can make a skilled team like the Pens look like clowns. Guilt by association.
Kostopoulos gets six games for his borderline hit on Brad Stuart, and this repeat offender scumbag gets FOUR? As long as the NHL allows this sad excuse for a man to continue receiving regular paychecks and ice time, the only justice he might receive will come from his peers (see: Evander Kane). As dirty a player Sean Avery has been in recent memory, Cooke has devolved further into the gutter. No doubts about it, he’s certainly made a name for himself – league wide – as a guy looking to injure maliciously. Anyone think the league is afraid to throw the book at Cooke because of a potential grievance from the NHLPA? Seems far fetched, but if this is an issue, I hope the NHLPA would take a step back and realize how much more Hockey stands to lose if a guy like Cooke is allowed to run at other players and potentially end careers. This guy shouldn’t even have another chance, but I hope that when he does, and inevitably tries to hurt someone else, the NHL will FINALLY put their foot down. Either that or Big Z steps in and makes Cooke wish his momma never let him step on the ice.
I know, but the headline rhymed. Give me credit for that.

Matt, if the league had thrown the book at Cooke he would be out for 20 games.
4 games is a joke, they need to look at a players prior history. 1st suspension should be 2-3 games, 2nd suspension 5-6, 3rd time 10-20, anything after that should be, gone for the year. No matter how bad the infraction, if you need to suspend the player, its pretty bad. I enjoy the fighting, and physical play, but this guy is just plain dangerous. Not that I’m a big fan of Savy, but this guys playing days may be over, thanks in part to bozo’s like Cooke.
This guy’s gonna end up paralyzing or killing somebody before the league delivers action-altering discipline.
4 is not even close. A game or two before the Blue Jacket game he INTENTIONALLY tried to take out Ovie’s knee. He INTENTIONALLY elbowed Savard in the head and INTENTIONALLY smash Tyutin in the boards. This guys career should be over because he has tried to INTENTIONALLY tried to end careers of others. Colin Campbell is a chickenshit idiot for not suspending Lemieux’s players accordingly.
They certainly responded better on the spot than us, as did the Caps
I think Cooke should be on the look out when he comes back. This is insane. Hopefully Columbus responds appropriately the next time they face him, unlike the Bruins did
