Bruins’ Thornton, Boychuk saw no choice but to fight who was there

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Bruins forward Shawn Thornton and defenseman Johnny Boychuk took a little guff from Canadian media types for taking on Roman Hamrlik and Jaroslav Spacek, respectively, toward the end of Boston’s 8-6 win over Montreal last night at TD Garden.
Thornton’s a player that strictly adheres to “The Code” so you knew there had to be an explanation for taking on a pacifist like Hamrlik.
“Not for me,” said Thornton this morning after practice at Ristuccia Arena when asked if it was a problem taking on a non-fighter. “Nothing would’ve happened, I don’t think, if he didn’t throw a punch. Then I lost my temper, obviously. But you punch me in the face, you should answer for it. That’s my take on it.”
Boychuk explained that he wouldn’t have done anything either if Hamrlik didn’t throw a punch and cause Spacek to get involved.
“I told him that if he grabbed me we’d probably have to fight, and then he let me go,” said the Boston blueliner. “And as soon as [Hamrlik] punched Shawn, I tried to get at him and then [Spacek] grabbed me. So it was just one of those things that we had to fight.”
Both Thornton and Boychuk were assessed game misconducts. But neither player, nor any of the Bruins, are facing the chance of supplemental discipline, according to head coach Claude Julien.
Mark,
Boychuk was a fighter in the AHL
Nice job getting those quotes, so we all now know why that happened because from the TSN broadcast they didn’t catch the punch that Hamrlik gave Thornton. Montreal fans got to stop whining and be mad at your team’s management for not having tough players who can actually play instead of all the divers and they have.
I wish Lucic would have got his hands on Subban. That guy talks so much shit, would’ve loved to see him get some teeth knocked out. Subban wouldn’t last a week playing his game pre-instigator rule. This game along with the game against Dallas should show the Bruins they succeed when they play physical.
@the other nifty:
Boychuk now has a whopping two NHL career fights under his belt. A tough kid, but I’d hardly classify him as a fighter, either. It’s just that Boychuk happened to have cleaned his clock…is all…
It’s not Canadian Media…it’s the Montreal Media and Montreal Fans. TSN (Canadian Sports TV Giant) covered the game and pointed out the glaring problems with the HABS not the Bruins. No whining there. We should clarify that. The rest of Canada loved it! What a great game!!! From Western Canada I can tell you that everyone I’ve talked to thought this was the best game they have seen in quite some time!
If you’re on the ice at the end of a game like that, you have to be ready to fight.
moen made a tactical error by fighting af considering soup, boychuk and thornton were all waiting for dance partners. even rex wanted a piece a plekanec.
I can’t believe all the whining that I am hearing come out of Canada!
Ahh the passivised Canadian media. When are they going to accept the fact that the Habs are a bunch of pansies?
I’m a Spacek fan. I think he’s underated and tough. He is not a fighter though. Thats two fights he didn’t want to be in this year. Poor guy. Poop happens.He could play on my team anyday though.
