Pitkanen
According to TSN reporter Darren Dreger, teams shopping for puck-moving help on defense, like the Bruins, might want to lower their gaze to Raleigh, where the Carolina Hurricanes might be willing to deal a veteran.
In his daily Dreger Report this morning, Dreger writes the Hurricanes “would consider moving Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen or Ian White, but sources say the Canes would need to get a defenceman in return as part of the compensation.”
Well, it just so happens the Bruins have an available legit top-four defenseman with several years of NHL experience, but he’s still just 26. And if Carolina’s not interested in Mark Stuart, who has become the team’s regular healthy scratch, maybe the Hurricanes would sniff around on Adam McQuaid, Andrew Ference or Johnny Boychuk.
The Bruins certainly have the pool of prospects and picks to add to the package and pry one of the above-mentioned Canes defensemen away. And all three would fall into the “puck-moving” category.
Pitkanen and White are both scheduled to be unrestricted free agents this summer. Pitkanen, 27, carries a $4 millon cap hit, while White, 26, hits the cap for a little less than $3 million.
Corvo, 33, is signed for next year in addition to this, at the cap hit of $2.25 million. His past off-ice issues, plus his disappearing act with Washington (six points in 18 games) down the stretch last season, would probably scare the Bruins off.
But there’s no reason, other than a steep price, for the Bruins to not be interested in Pitkanen and White, who would really fill the hole Boston has had since Dennis Wideman dropped his playing level and then was traded.
Hopefully for the Bruins, at least part of general manager Peter Chiarelli’s mind is on Carolina.

I’m with Aaron and the other Nifty Pitkanen is who I would covet. Stuart and conditional pick 3rd if Joni doesn’t resign n bolts Bruins 2nd pick (not Minnesota’s PC got in the Kobasew trade) if Pitkanen resigns with Boston.
PC has four picks in the first two rounds he needs to use some of them to get mobility on the blueline.
Corvo please
A Corvo for Stuart deal would work, but I would deal McQuaid or Boychuck for him too
What is Boychucks roll right now? Is he meeting Julians expectations?
Boychuk has had a tough season and should probably watch a few games from the press box to get Stuart some time. But please don’t trade him. He’s only a second year NHLer and will be good for a while.
It’s hard to get a read on some D men. You have to put them on an island. How well a guy plays has a lot to do with their partner and their forward units. Who they are defending and who’s covering up for their boo boos.(goalie). I’ve seen Nick Lidstrom look like Luke Schenn some shifts. No D man is immune to turnovers. We’ve got to admit that it’s harder to play that position than say 5 years ago.
Man. McBain?? Now you’re talking. I doubt he’s on the table. I would also love a crack at Pitkanen, but for Boychuck?? No way. Far too high a price for a potential rental.
Considering our team is so beautifully balanced and doesn’t have that league leader type guy when it comes to scoring, why do all the fans only see stats when passing judgment on our players? Boychuck is a phenomenal defensive presence, even when he’s not hammering people or putting numbers on the board. Maybe he’s still getting used to an 82 game slate, but it would take quite the package for me to see him go.
Any chance of getting jamie mcbain?
The Boychuks are not cousins.
Johnny Boychuk has tremendous hockey sense. He is 3rd on the team in shifts per game and on ice per game (in both categories behind Chara and Seidenberg) and he has a plus 11, to Seidenberg’s plus 10. Am I putting down Seidenberg. No. Am I saying that Boychuk is just as good as Seidenberg. Yes. Earlier in the year, when we played Washington a bunch of times, he handled Ovechkin on more than one occasion. Any defenseman with over 20 minutes of average playing time plays against the best players in the league. He has not only graduated under the Bruins, but he has completely defined what the Bruins back end ought to act like. He is the Lucic of Boston Bruins Blueliners. How could anyone think that trading him away would help our team. Rubbish!
They are cousins, so it might help
Have you bothered to watch Carolina games this year? Fans want to run Pitkanen out on a rail. He’s a defensively liability that’ll make Bruins fans wistful for Wideman
DO
NOT
TRADE
JOHNNY
BOYCHUK!
two boychuks on one team ain’t right.
pitkannen had a lot injuries in the past, i hope he´ll stay healthy…
I for one haven’t been impressed with Boychuk’s play of late… hasn’t been too physical, and his puckhandling abilities are questionable. Looks a little nervous whenever he has the puck. Pitkanen could work out very well. I would say Boychuk and our 2nd rounder (because we have Minny’s) for Pitkanen would be a more than fair trade for both the B’s and Carolina. Who knows… if the B’s can unload Ference as part of a deal to bring in a scoring winger, could you imagine the D pairings?
Chara/Kampfer
Seidenberg/Pitkanen
McQuaid/Stuart
I’d take those pairings in the playoffs. Also, the idea of Bergy working the half-wall with Pitkanen and Chara at the points makes me drool.
@Aaron. Couldn’t agree more. Well said. White might be a little better than Boychuk offensively but his size is less than Johnny’s. Pitkanen would give us a calming presence back there.
Pitkanen would be a great add. I’m a fan of White but I’m not convinced he’s a major upgrade over what we have already. Certainly not if you’re moving a Boychuk (for example) to get him.
