Scratch another off list of potential Bruins targets, Versteeg’s a Flyer

Versteeg
There won’t be any return engagement for Kris Versteeg in the Bruins’ organization.
Boston’s fifth-round pick in 2004, who was traded to Chicago by Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli for short-timer Brandon Bochenski in 2007, was dealt today by Toronto to Phildelphia for a the Flyers’ first- and third-round picks in this June’s draft.
The price was pretty steep, but Versteeg is a two-time 20-goal scorer with the potential for more on a team as deep as the Flyers. Plus he’s signed through the end of next season at a cap hit a little north of $3 million. So the Flyers should get a decent run out of Versteeg, which makes giving up a decent chunk of the future worth it for the team that sits atop the Eastern Conference and is one season removed from playing for the Stanley Cup.
Philadelphia sits second overall in the NHL and is already third in goals score per game. The Flyers’ 5-on-5 goals for/goals against ratio is second only to the Bruins.
It’s doubtful Toronto would’ve traded Versteeg within the division for the same price, especially in light of the recent history between the Bruins and Maple Leafs in the trade market. Plus, if Chiarelli and his brass didn’t like Versteeg’s game much four years ago, their opinion might not have changed.
But the Flyers have bolstered their front line with two weeks to go until the trade deadline. Expectations for the Bruins to make a counter move before Feb. 28 have now increased.
Philly paid a high price, only if they dont win the cup. If they do was it all worth it? I would say so, since it will still be 39yrs and counting for our B’s. I think waiting 39yrs in between cup wins is being pretty patient, no?
Bojangles – yes to what you said 1000%.
It’s refreshing to see fans understand the value of patience. A 1st and 3rd is a steep price to pay for a guy like Versteeg or Fisher.
With solid free agents this off-season, Toronto’s top-5 pick in the draft, expiring UFA/RFA $$ with Recchi, Wheeler and Ryder, and the Savard money to be determined, it would make sense for 1-2 role players to be added this year but not that huge splash everyone is looking for.
This team can still make a run this year without mortgaging the future, and that window looks to remain open for at least another 4-5 years given the talent of the younger guys tied up with contracts and the Thomas-to-Rask transition still on the horizon.
Patience, kimosabe.
Bojangles, I wholeheartedly agree.
Even more reason not to deal the leafs pick going forward unless you get a “difference maker” in return that is not a UFA at seasons end.
Today that pick is at worst #5/6 – with Toronto trading everything they have it’s easy to see them sliding down even further and seeing the Devils and Islanders move ahead in the standings.
What does this mean for the Bruins ??- how about a #3 pick in next years draft. PC must get a HUGE return for this pick – think Parise
there are no shortage of desperate moves chia can make to blow our bounty on. We’ll get far more in return in the off-season or near the draft. I want a cup as bad as anyone, but not for the price Philly paid for Versteeg. this team needs a difference maker, not a role player. It ain’t happening – hold the pick until we can get value!
You never know how these things are going to work out, but man, as a Bruins fan, you really have to hate this trade or anything that could potentially make the Phlyers a better team for that matter.
I was thinking the same thing. How can Philly possibly sign that stacked lineup under the cap??? It’s pretty interesting to look at their lineup on CapGeek.

I love the B’s, but I can’t see them getting past that squad, even with their questionable goaltending. Let’s hope P.C.’s big move is a BIG one!!
I’m a bit surprised Philadelphia tossed in two picks to a team throwing rats off the sinking ship. I was wondering if Caron being sent back indicated an imminent move for the Bruins. I’ll have a tough time believing that the Stars are going to seriously shop Richards until and unless they actually move him based on their standings position, though I was definitely curious when I saw a headline on NHL.com noting that Richards would not be with the Stars for the start of their road trip, given the chatter about him. Apparently, though, he’s just taking some time off for a minor injury. Ah well, it’s fun to dream.
Those two picks are really 2nd and 4th rounders considering philly’s will probly make a late playoff run again.Chia better get richards,or it might be another disapointing playoffs for the B’s.
All I can say is… targets are dropping like flies. Chia better have something mighty satisfying in the works.
A first and a third. Hmm. For how he produced in T.O that’s a decent return. He does have some skill and big game ability as seen last year. The rich get richer. How do they stay below the cap with basically an all-star team. Ver Beauty can go back to a third line that is stacked and maybe get another ring.
Has Chirelli, shown anything yet as a GM? Versteeg for Brandon Bochenski, not so much. Savard, what, 8 year deal, Thomas, granted while he is playing great this year, a 5 year deal for a mid 30′s goalie. The best deal he has made has been the Toronto deal, and Seguin happened to fall into his lap, out of pure luck. Granted, he’s better than the O’Connell era, but I’m not sure, he’s made good decisions. Oh yeah, just came to me, Ryder and Wheeler, Really?
burke selling = another top 5 pick for chia
*JVR
So does Versteeg move to wing? Like a Giroux/Versteeg/JVM line? Just what every other EC team needed… the Flyers got even better. F@ckkkkkk
like the old girlfriend you can thank for your valtrex prescription, i don’t see burke jumping back in the sack with chia. hopefully philly has another goalie playoff implosion.
