Bruins should move Leafs’ first-round pick before it gets any lower
Chiarelli might not have been actively shopping that first-round pick a week ago, but he should start pressing hard to get it off his hands before it’s too late.

you guys are nuts i wouldn’t trade wheeler for Kaberle the bruins will be sorry mark my words.Kaberle takes too many nights off he is like kovlev only on defence.I like philps in Ottawa good shutdown defence would be asesome with Charra
the bruins just traded stuart, hamil and wheeler to vancouver for both sedins and a first round pick.
Digger, I understand that.
But the lower it gets, the less valuable it is to the Bruins team that drafted Zach Hamill and more valuable to another team that needs every prospect it can get.
MK
Folks, Horton has a NTC. No way that guy’s going anywhere. He “loves” it here.
I’m just about exhausted from the rumors. I think I’m just going to wait for that text from the B’s saying we got Kaberle, if it happens. Let me just say this, though: Nucks are favored to be in the cup finals, yes. Has Roberto Luongo ever NOT crapped his pants in the playoffs? No. So the last thing anyone needs is to hear more talk about how stacked the Canucks are, when its not even a sure thing their goalie has the intestinal fortitude to be the guy they need him to be in the playoffs.
hockeybuzz reporting kaberle to nucks with bieksa out.
Excuse me, not centering, and I really don’t know why I said Rick Nash. I was thinking about Brad Richards. I just took a vibrations test so I apologize for my brain being a bit fried.
Either way, I stand by the statement that we wouldn’t be much better off with Richards centering Lucic and Horton. I’d rather keep the picks and players.
It seems like Kaberle trade is not a sure thing yet: http://www.nhl.com/ice/blog.htm?id=17#&navid=nav-nws-trd
Quick, trade the pick before the other 29 NHL teams realize it’s not a top 5? It’s a two way street. The trading partners are fully aware as to where this pick may land.
Once the dust clears on Kaberle and Stuart… they should have $2m (+/-) left. I’m be pumped if they find a way to package either Horton, plus salary (Caron/Paille) and a pick(s) for Nash/Backes type… or Krecji plus same for Richards. Its looking within reach….
But Voracek is ava! LOL!
Haha I was pipe-dreaming, don’t mind me
rick nash is a center now?
grabner is on the block now? you guys are wild.
I don’t understand why suddenly a pick outside of the top five isn’t any good. We couldn’t win the cup with Rick friggen Nash centering our first line, so why waste it?
Love Voracek. He’d be cheap, too. Maybe Chia should go get Michael Grabner for some picks… dunno if he’d be available but that kid has been straight FIRE recently. And he can shoot.
I´ve just checked on TSN trade who´s in play and from that list my favorities would be Bogosian and Corvo on the D. I saw that Voracek is ava, I think he could boost our forwards, what do you guys think?
People seem to forget that for the most part those two 1st were never expected to be lottery picks in the first place. Most had the Leafs projected to be a bubble team or a little lower, not basement dwellers. If Kessel winds up being a #2, #5-10, and a #32 pick, the B’s have done well for themselves.
I actually think Kaberle would be a good fit beside Z, and considering he’s limited his potential destinations and seemingly wants to come here, we actually have a decent chance of resigning him beyond this season. In a full season with the B’s, he could definitely put up 50 points. Bogosian, and especially Gudbranson are not going to be made available – I just don’t see it. Big no to Liles, Gilbert, etc; term and $ just aren’t a fit, considering what they bring to the table. We’re going to see Minny’s 2nd and Wheels in play for Kaberle (then hopefully we’ll be jumping back on the market for a productive winger). Also – all of this doom and gloom talk about having to move this Leafs pick now, before it loses too much value, is a little too much. Impact players get drafted outside of the lottery all the time; we’ll get a solid player with that pick. This is not a 1 year project.
In the stock market when you sell low you get killed. Same for the NHL. No need to worry. That’s why you write about the Bruins not work for them. The Leafs have problems in goal right now. That will add up to losses. Keep the pick unles you get a superstar in return.

PS: send a couple of picks to the stars with wheeler or stuart.. and then trade Krecji for Yandle (he is a stud).
I think the pick up of Kelly puts Krejci’s job in jeporady, If the bruins are serious about going after Richards and acquiring a “puck moving defenseman”at the same time, then David may very well be the odd man out.
Burke just on NHL Network sounded as if no deal is close and he is still talking to multiple teams about Kaberle.
What’s with you guys obsessed with young defenseman who hasn’t done jack? Sure they might perform later, but so can draft picks or guys in the farm. It makes no sense to trade for a young guy when you are trying to win now.
NHL.com reporting 2nd hand from CSNNE.com that likely trade is close to getting done, wheeler and a pick (pick not specified) to Toronto and Stuart to Chicago for a pick.
Kaberle in Black and Gold looking more like reality by the minute.
On that note, if this is true, it means that Chia is keeping space open for another deal, because according to capgeek.com, moving just wheeler would give us enough cap space to make the deal.
Will be interesting to see round three if this is indeed round two.
Not to blow up this blog but- Joe Haggerty is reporting that Stuart to Chicago for a draft pick is very likely, as a cap-relief measure. I hope Chia is looking at options for a role-playing winger, if that’s the case.
Zach-
Someone on here or NESN.com a long time ago referred to Kaberle as an “overpaid marshmallow”, which I think is absolutely hilarious.
At the same time, the guy hasn’t had a sub-30 point season since his rookie year, and whenever he’s played 75 games or more, he’s delivered more than 40 points. He’s a career +25, which I know isn’t stellar, but even on a struggling Leafs team this year, he’s only a -2. Perhaps being paired with Chara will allow Kaberle to do what he does best, and vice versa.
I have a strange feeling that if Kabby really does end up here, Kampfer may be the odd man out for the season. I love the kid, but would the B’s want to take Stuart or Ference or McQuaid out of the lineup for him? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
One final note- I think Kaberle’s hit is 4.25mil this year… with Ryder presumably off the books, Stuart potentially gone or resigning for a lower number, and who knows who else out of the way… maybe a deep playoff run would inspire Chia to resign Kaberle to a cap-friendly hit. We’ll have to see what kind of dynamic the guy holds with the team.
This team is built to win NOW. Thomas is having a career year. You need to roll the dice and go for it. This team has plenty of prospects and has their own first round pick still. It is a perfect storm to go and get the impact player(s) needed for a serious run not only this year, but next.

GR90 – our points are the same.
SanDog – I’m with you. I first started suggesting the TO 1 for Gundbrandson a month ago. I’d do it straight up, even, but if you can get them to toss in a cookie (Weiss is more of a brownie!) – I’ll do the paperwork, myself.
I dont want kaberle.. what is chiarellis deal on this guy.. he’s been all boned up about this guy for the last two years.. like brian said they arent going to win it this year anyway or ever with claude as coach , get some young talent .. not some rental 33 year old .. this trade deadline is just starting to get frustrating
*Dreger
Bojangles- I know Fowler went 12th, but TOR’s pick this year could end up as a 6th or 7th; my point was that just because its not a loterry pick, doesnt mean it’s going to lose a ton of appeal.
SanDog- Liles had a double-digit +/- and 30 pts in his first 32 games this season. He moves the puck well and could even work a point on the PP. He’s not the best defensive defenseman, like brian said above… but meh. If Dredger is right, this all could be a moot point!
Darren Dreger of TSN says that the Kaberle to Boston deal is as good as done!
TO also started the season on fire. They’ve gone through fits and spurts all year. No reason to panic at this point. If there’s a good deal to be had (and for that pick it better be a damn important player), then by all means go for it. But its a bit chicken little to start shopping it because the Leafs have won a few games.
liles does not fit this team’s system, he is a shitty defensive defenseman. julien doesn’t even like marginally bad defensive forwards, why the hell would they march liles out there on a regular shift?
what is with this abandon the plan attitude in this town. this team is not in need of drastic changes to compete now and be formidable into the future. how much value can the leafs’ pick really lose? they aren’t good and are trading everyone. keep the pick as opposed to wasting it on a rental. the bruins aren’t going to win the cup this year anyway, even if they get the elusive “puck moving defenseman.” get a real scorer, that gives you a better chance.
i would love to know the truth about bogosian.. is he really up for grabs? sure he hasnt done as much as he was supposed to, but hes twenty .. and plays in atlanta .. imagine if he came to boston and got to skate next to chara and even ference , who doest have much skill but he knows the game.. plus this defense first system . thats probably only one of the only scenarios i wouldnt mind seeing the toronto pick get traded
GR, Your a good poster I like reading you comments but could you please explain John-Michael Liles 1 assist and is minus-17 in his last 11 games w/Avs – including a -4 vs Boston at 4.2Mil clip for next year as well ? He’s on good team in a dominant conference so just not seeing the fascination.
Matt K, If Chiarelli does pull off a deal for TOs pick it must be a blockbuster. Also I think Dale Tallon is the one who has put an offer in for the TOs #1 pick and if Florida is offering Gudbranson I say PC should take it but only if it includes Weiss your thoughts ?
I know it would never happen but man would Rick Nash look good in black and gold
Cam Fowler went 12th.
Great point, Matt. On paper, the Leafs don’t have a cakewalk for the rest of the season, so we can only hope they get shut down a few times and lose confidence. Even better, maybe one of their diminutive scorers (Kessel or Grabovski) will slump, and not be able to contribute to other aspects of the game. Even a 6th or 7th overall pick is a good asset to have… look at where Skinner and Fowler went last year. But still, gotta hope the lottery awaits us. Chia needs to find an impact player signed for at least two more years, and swing this first rounder with Wheeler, Stuart or Boychuk (though I wish it could be Ference… sigh) for an impact forward or John-Michael Liles. The Avs are in the midst of a brutal beatdown… they have to be thinking about the allure of that pick when it could yield a Larsson, Nugent-Hopkins, or Courturier (sp?).
Just a thought… Johnny B is an Edmonton native. Perhaps Chia finds a way to send him back there with the first rounder and/or a B-level prospect for Penner, Foster, or Tom Gilbert? If the B’s are looking for an under-the-radar D-man who can make a difference, Foster is their guy… huge reach, surprisingly good vision, and a bomb of a shot.
Matt, take a closer look at their schedule, they surged mostly because they’ve played the bottom half of the Eastern Conference. The Leafs schedule gets much tougher after their game with the Islanders on Tuesday.
Also, beyond the top 3 (which it was unlikely the Leafs were ever going to finish behind EDM, NYI, and OTT) the next set of players 4-9 are rated very similarly, since it’s unlikely Toronto gets out of that grouping, that pick isn’t going to lose much (if any) value.
