WILMINGTON, Mass. — Forward Rich Peverley skated in his first practice with the Bruins today at Ristuccia Arena, with his new uniform number 49 stuck on the back of his helmet in decals.
Peverley had wore No. 47 with Atlanta but decided he didn’t want to haggle with Bruins rookie Steven Kampfer to get that number back.
“I’m not going to try to steal any numbers from anybody. I’m a new guy coming in, I just want to fit in,” said Peverley.
Kampfer said he offered the number to Peverley as soon as he met him, but the veteran declined. If Kampfer had surrendered his 47, he said he would’ve gone for 27. He said he hates even numbers and likes to have a 7 in whatever number he wears.
It seems 27 is a popular number among players on the Bruins. Milan Lucic wore it in junior (but had to take 17 in Boston because of Glen Murray) and Brad Marchand said he has also worn it in the past.
