Hnidy has proven you can come home again to the Bruins

BOSTON — It seems like every pregame dinner companion of Bruins forward Shawn Thornton over the last several seasons gets traded and is never heard from again around these parts.

Defenseman Shane Hnidy is trying to buck that trend.

Today Hnidy had his first home morning skate at TD Garden since re-signing with the Bruins last week during the team’s road trip to Western Canada. For Hnidy, a member of the Bruins in 2007-08 and ’08-09, things couldn’t be better than being back in the Hub with the Black and Gold.

“We got to the point where it was just a start,” said Hnidy about the search for a new team after he was injured in training camp and did not catch on with the Phoenix Coyotes in the fall. ” Talking to my agent, basically the first thing on my mind was ‘Check with [the Bruins].’ And it just worked out so we didn’t have to try to pursue anything else, which I liked. That was perfect.”

Hnidy is still not medically cleared to play. But he’s hoping there’ll be enough practice time coming up so he can progress on the road to recovery and be back in the lineup sooner rather than later.

“Right now, I’m practicing. And we’re going to progress it,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of games, so it’s tough. [I've been in] a lot of morning skates, and I think I had one day of a little bit of battles, and it felt good. I wasn’t giving it 100 [percent] but I think as we go on we’re really going to progress in that area and see what we got.”

With Andrew Ference on the mend, the urgency for Hnidy to be ready might be lessened. However, the Bruins could still use another spare body on their back end should another injury hit.
