Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin updated the media on Max Pacioretty’s status this morning.
“Max Pacioretty has a severe concussion, as well as a fracture of the fourth cervical vertebrae, but it’s not displaced,” Martin said. “Max will remain at the hospital for further observation. There will be no other prognosis for the time being, but he will obviously be out indefinitely. The most important thing for our organization right now is Max’s recovery. We will continue following recommendations from the doctors and of course, Max and his immediate family would appreciate privacy in this matter.”
I’m sure the NHL will take into account the severity of Pacioretty’s injury when determining Zdeno Chara’s punishment. We’re still awaiting word from the league as Chara and his teammates practice at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington.

The partition is there every night. It doesn’t jump out into the middle of the ice and hit someone. It took Chara to push Max’s head into that stanchion for this injury to take place. You replace the stanchion with something else and he would have found another way to nail the kid.

The problem with the partition, like others have said, is the angle. However, to get a big enough angle for players to glance off you would probably want less than a 45* angle there (at the ice edge). In a lot of rinks that would mean eliminating the press box between the two benches, or getting rid of some seats to make enough room for it.

Chara never meant to injure, but he did want to knock him over and change the momentum of the game. That’s what a captain is suppose to do in a situation like this.
However, because it was the same guy who nudged him after scoring in O.T. there was added insentive. I think Chara should get one or two games. He would be better off for it. He needs to take a breather, cool down, and not let any Montreal player, fan, or lead, get to him.
If he can’t control his emotions, how can anyone else on this team be expected to?
Pete, you make a great point on the engineering issue. If those partitions were angled in, toward the red line, a player would glance off rather than – in last night’s case – be nearly decapitated.
Not an argument for who/what is to blame, but the league and venues should do everything they can, operationally, to take such dangers out of the game.
Who says Chara should be punished anyway? It wasn’t a dirty hit and in my opinion even questionable as far as interference. The fault lies in the way the glass is joined there. Why is it at right angles?
Best wishes to Pac. Watching him play against the B’s drives me crazy, but there’s always room in the league for guys who exhibit that kind of hustle and scrap. It’s the mark of a good, gritty player when opposing fans hate having to match off against someone, and Pacioretty’s one of those guys.
And if nothing else, I’m sure it’s a scary time for the 22-YO and his family, with so many questions currently unanswered.

This is the end of a couple game where chara where looking to revenge the little push Max did in OT But im sure Zdeno would never do this again and be more careful to what he did
