Seidenberg/By S. Bradley
BOSTON – Five members of the Bruins’ defense corps started a new club tonight in the club’s 4-3 overtime loss to Buffalo.
With the exception of rookie Matt Bartkowski, every Boston blueliner picked up at least one minor penalty tonight.
When you mix in three more minors called on forwards, the Sabres enjoyed seven power plays and 8:29 of man-advantage time, which produced two extra-man goals including Tim Connolly’s game-tying score with 5:05 elapsed in the third period.
If tonight was any indication and the outrage over Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty and the league’s subsequent decision not to suspend the Boston captain is as widespread as I believe, the Bruins might want to get used to being on the penalty kill.
There was obviously some embellishment on the part of the Sabres tonight. Steve Montador rolled 15 feet into the boards to draw a boarding call, and Andrej Sekera looked like he was on a slip-and-slide after Brad Marchand got his stick caught in the Buffalo defenseman’s skates. But it takes two referees to fall for the flopping and also make some other borderline calls in the opponents’ favor, whether it was Dennis Seidenberg’s love-tap crosscheck or Johnny Boychuk’s hook later on.
The Bruins have been at or near the bottom of the league in times shorthanded all season. But with the reputation they’re building up, that might change. Never mind the physical play of Chara, Milan Lucic, Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell. Never mind the agitating of Brad Marchand and the open-ice body blows of Johnny Boychuk. With longtime pacifist Nathan Horton collecting five fighting majors over two thirds of a season, there’s an obvious extra angry edge to this Bruins club. Previous fight-filled performances against Montreal and Dallas seemed like anomalies over the course of a long season. But with three more fighting majors tonight, the Bruins as a team are third in the league in that department.
The way game is played today and the way the rules are enforced, you can’t call them the “Big, Bad Bruins.” That doesn’t mean they can’t find themselves in some deep trouble with the official just based on that reputation. Marchand, who earlier this week called the Canadiens “divers,” wasn’t taking the bait to criticize his phantom tripping call. However, he was hoping that the future would hold more fair treatment of his team.
“They might be [calling Bruins games tighter], I don’t know. They shouldn’t be,” he said. “We play a certain way. We play hard, we play tough and maybe they’re a little wise against us because we do play a lot more physical than a lot of teams. But that shouldn’t be the case. We shouldn’t be getting more penalized than anybody else because we play more physical.”
It’s the Bruins style to up the roughhousing level. And it works. The Bruins’ best performances are ones where they’re banging bodies into the board as well as pucks into the net. This might just be a case of Boston needing to fine-tune its penalty kill, which fell into the bottom half of the league rankings weeks ago and hasn’t recovered. Or it could just be a matter of toeing the line better between physical play and infractions.
As Tim Thomas said of tonight’s performance: “After the first couple, you realize that they’re going to call them tight, at least against us. So you’ve got to be smarter than that, and not do borderline plays that can get you those calls.”
We’ll see if the Bruins can heed Thomas’ advice going forward. The target on Chara’s back has certainly doubled since the Pacioretty play, and Lucic seems to be involved in some tiff or another every night. Teams are going to try to goad the Bruins into fisticuffs and penalties at every turn. In particular, the playoffs could be a difficult time to navigate through if Boston’s getting sidetracked by awkward calls, supplemental discipline and extracurricular activities.
The Bruins have found their identity. Now they have to figure out a way to fit it into the way the league wants teams to play.

I respect your opinion and disagree.
Or, one could use two minutes of their time to actually look up stats and realize Tyler Myers does not fight and is not their “marquee” player.
You know, facts and stuff.
Hey tough guy, ever heard of marquee player for marquee player? Lucic for Meyer OK, Lucic for McCormick? Like that makes sense.
When Claude Julien first met with Zdeno Chara; he quickly made him realize that positionnal play is key for him to be efffective team wise, winning wise.
He won the Norris trophee focusing on what Claude Julien’s taught him. Zedno needs to get back to a Chelios kind of space minder on the ice for two reasons:
1. He is on the spot penalty wise, and so what he brings to the table physically wise could hurt more than help the team’s objective.
2. He is really good at what he does when he does stick to it.
Pay attention, when Zedno is on the ice for a goal against, more often than not he would either be tangled up with someone behind the net or in the corner. Keep it simple Z. And yes you can do it and it will easier on you too.
Lucic plays his best when he plays physical, but among all Bruins on the ice, he is the most likely to do something goonish (i.e. a dirty or dangerous hit or picking on smaller players). That being said, he does it fairly infrequently, but when he’s in the heat of the moment, I’ve seen him make hits I would like to see him suspended for. Again, that said, he hasn’t gone over that line at all this season as far as I have seen, although he is getting close to that line again and I can’t watch every game.
I really like the way our team plays. Our players usually make big, physical, and most importantly, LEGAL hit on the opponents to make life rough for the opposing team. That isn’t “gooning” it’s a good defensive strategy designed to wear the opposition down. Players occasionally get injured on these plays, but rare is the day an opposing team actually goes and attacks the bruin responsible for the hit. That’s not because the rest of the league is full of pansies, (though certain cities have abnormally high concentrations of them) it’s because the hits are clean. Why would they be upset about a good clean check, even if the player does get up? Boston also responds the same way, the hits that gave Krejci, Kampfer, and Savard concussion (this season) resulted in no fisticuffs if I recall. That’s because they were clean and unfortunate plays.
So remember, the Bruins are not goons, they just bring it.
Gaustad had already been roughed up by McQuaid. Also, Lucic may have wanted to get a little bit of payback because Cambell took a few lumps from McCormick early on. Also, the Bruins were a lot more inconsistent when they were not dictating the physical play in the earlier part of the season. I’ll take the winning that seems to usually follow the fighting. I do hate to see serious injuries, the talent pool in the NHL is a little too thin as it is.
@rickinnh, If you had actually watched the game you would have seen that McCormick pulled Lucic assside and started the fight.
I would suggest Gaustad is the toughest on that squad. sorry, McCormick is not tough. my larger point remains, how about a Bruins team that plays with class and composure. they way they played the first 50 or so games. whats with all the hotheadedness lately, how about a clean hard hitting game, and the focus on winning games. fight if invited, but enough with starting the fights.
By the way, Bernard, that bit about the Habs fans causing a fuss was not directed at you. You are much more well behaved than a lot of people who have descended on this blog.
The people on both sides who try to insult each other are getting old. I’m glad that the majority of Habs fans who were doing that here, and I hope that the b’s fans who did it to the Habs, are gone. One of the worst things from this situation, other than what happened to Max, is that plays that everyone can agree are dirty are getting overlooked. Did anyone see the elbow by Kubina to the back of Dave Bolland’s head? That was terrible.
ricknnh, I don’t agree with you in this case because Tyler Myers has zero fights in his NHL career and McCorrmick has 16 this season. To be fair, Lucic has tried to start fights near the end of a couple games that I question why he even bothers. The Bruins don’t goon it up, they just have more players on their team that are willing to fight to settle problems on the ice than many other teams. Some teams, like the current Canadiens squad, like to provoke another team to the point of fighting but are mad that it actually happens because their guys are not ‘fighters’. Then their fans/media will say the Bruins are ‘goons’ as their team calls one up from the AHL and he proceeds to fight defending a teammate, exactly like the Bruins do. Why didn’t McCormick fight Chara? He is the biggest guy on the ice right? FYI Bernard this is not the same George that posted ridiculous comments about high-level hockey and insulted Canada.
I enjoy these generalized attacks on “Bruins fans” as a whole. How many Bruins fans do Habs fans know on a personal level, and vice versa? Let’s be serious, these arbitrary insults are pretty lame. All sports fans are going to be biased… the difference here is that Bruins fans stopped purveying one-sided views about two days ago, while Habs fans are still screaming bloody murder.
Also, Tyler Myers is well-documented as a pansy. McCormick is the toughest player on that team, hands down.
And finally, people should go to ESPN.com and read Ryan Smyth’s opinion of the Chara ruling, coming from a guy who had nearly the same exact injury. I’ll take his word over any.
@Jeremy…not to mention Meyers only has 34 PIM…does he even fight?
Also, Bernard, if Chara had gotten 2-3 games I would have no problem with that. Having watched Chara since he came to Boston, I can assure you that he throws dirty hits no more often than any other big, physical player. In hockey, tragedies happen. Every team, and fan base, has to deal with it. Hopefully Pacioretty can have the same comeback that Savage did from a very similar injury.
rick, Lucic is 6’4″ 220, McCormick is 6’3″ 220. Lucic has 103 PIMs, McCormick has 130. Not a huge mismatch in my book, also McCormick has 16 fighting majors, 4th in the league. So while I also hate when Lucic goes after a smaller guy, i.e. Dominick Moore, This was hardly a mismatch.
I’d anticipate the Bs having a microscope on their play from here on out, especially with some of the higher profile players speaking out after the hit. Watching last night was just the pendulum swinging back in the other direction. They’re going to have to dial it back a little until this blows over. Hopefully it doesn’t set them back too much with the playoffs so close.
It is unfortunate that their greatest strength 2 weeks ago is now their most exploitable weakness. If they can’t keep it together after the whistle they’re not going to need to work on the PK in practice.
Good article MK.
McCormick is Buffalo’s toughest player.
You nailed it right there Rick. I am starting to reconciliate with man kind.
the Bruins were a fun bunch to watch, hard hitting, good locker room, it was a ‘feel good’ story. now they are really gooning it up. I for one am sorry to see it happening. I would rather watch a disciplined team that plays tough and sticks together and trys to score goals and win the games. seems they would rather get into fights. really disappointed that my man Lucic went after McCormick last night. Neely would have found the biggest guy and gone after him, and Myers was more than available. very sad to watch.
Everyone… shhhhhhhhhhhh. Please…some of us are trying to watch hockey.
Hey BenPouliot, go to YouTube and search for: Hal Gill Hits Jon Sim Into Turnbuckle… The subcaption of this video: “Habs Fans Cheer.”
Hypocrite.
And as far as Cooke goes, if you can make comparisons between the two with a clean conscience than you need to re-evaluate your moral makeup.
Now go call 911 on me.
it is amazing how much you bruins fans are such hypocrites!! You scream your heads off when Matt Cooke hits Marc Savard with a LEGAL hit (there was no penalty and it fit within the rule guidelines at the time) but you think the vicious ILLEGAL hit (a major penalty was assessed and even the league agrees it was a penalty) Chara delivered to break a guys neck was ok. If anything, Chara deserves to be punished more than Cooke because Cooke’s hit was within the rules. But the point is these kinds of hits need to be punished regardless of who delivers him. So stop being such hypocrites bruins fans!!!!

Hey, Bernard, here’s a site for you: http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/index.html
Breaking news!!
Avery gets two games for showing the finger.
Complaining about the officiating is for whiners. Having said that, last night’s officiating bordered on the absurd. The boarding call on Chara was an absolute joke. I hope they hire some professional officials for the next game.
Nailed it!
Go B’s.
matt’s fault for turning this into a habs board. he was calling for chara’s head 30 min after the game.
i’m never heard andy brickley that frustrated over calls. get used to 5 on 3s, boys.
Where is the criminal investigation into the fact that there was padding for that turnbuckle that was not put on? We see that exact same play at least 100 times in a season. Th difference? No injury, therefore no discussion, no review, and no rediculously absurd investigation. There was an almost identical hit in Boston against Tampa, but again there was no injury so no crying. Look, it was a hard hockey play. I am sorry Pacioretty got hurt and relieved that he will be ok, but you need to let this go. Chara has already received more punishment than he deserved and you are all starting to look stupid.
As for last nights game. I am usually not one to blame officials. It is up to the Bruins to push past it. But last night was terrible. The Bruins were the better team and were robbed. If this continues it will become extremely frustrating not only for the players but for us fans as well.
Shut up Bernard, you miss the request by Matt to stop the personal attacks. We get it, you think Chara is the root of all evil and that all Bruins fans are just as evil. Guess what? This is a Bruins blog, take your Bruins hate somewhere else.
Zdeno said he did not know Max was on the ice when the hit occured. Anyboby who played the game at highlevel knows that’s a lie, right Georges? You lie once in front of a judge and the rest testimony takes a different color let me tell you. Everything Chara said from the beginning has no ground to support it and will only serve as further evidence for the judge.
A word of wisdom from NHL gravy Henrick Sedin could serve as medecine for a lot of people I find. Especially those who claim they have played the game at a high level before their every comments (Hey George??).
Also, the speed at which the game is played is generated by the players themselve. It looks speedy for us and it is. But between themselve the speed at which the game is played is common ground for everyone on the ice and one who cannot deal with it plays a lesser league. Yes Hopkins punches are fast and accurate for all of us but the Calzagues of this world. Its all relative is what I’m saying. So the, things happen fast, argument does not stand in front of a judge. And despite your hopes, the chain is on and justice will follow its path as it should.
Bettman days are counted. Wisdom always finds its way on top. Hockey fans do not expect anything from the Bruins fans other than being what they are, sick.
Why don’t you guys switch to MMA. We could send GSP down to help you out with your new sport. Again a french guy would bring talent in town. Something the beaners cannot find within its vincinity. We are all laughing out loud at a country who comtemplates the possibility of having Sarah Pahlin as a president doing nothing to avoid such a step back. Lousy real lousy society.
I agree with you Matt, the officiating last night created a situation where the Bruins might as well lose Chara for a game or two. It was rediculous, and tired out all the Bruins penalty killers. I do contend that the Bruins are a better team when Lucic and Horton are playing a tough power game, and dropping the gloves if they need to. Go B’s.
Well said Matt.
Quick get some Nathan Gerbies and some Brian Campbells because the game is changing overnight. We’re so 2000 and late.
Wow, great article. I couldn’t agree more.
