Two-game NHL ban for Bruins winger is just March-and madness

Marchand/By S. Bradley
Once again the disciplinarians of the NHL leave us wondering just how many spots the ball can land in on their roulette wheel of justice.
Bruins winger Brad Marchand was suspended two games today by the league one day after San Jose’ s Dany Heatley was handed a ban of the same length for a more egregious act.
Marchand will miss tonight’s game in Nashville and Saturday’s in Toronto. It was fully expected that Marchand would face some sort of suspension after his elbow from behind to the head of Columbus’ R.J. Umberger Tuesday. Two games might not seem like much, but relatively speaking it’s too long of a ban.
Keep in mind that while Heatley has been in the league much longer and Marchand is a rookie with a reputation for rambunctiousness, neither player has been in trouble with the league prior to their respective head-knocking elbows Tuesday night.
When you watch the two plays, they’re not equal in severity or intent, yet the league deemed them worthy of equal punishment.
Here are the two hits again, starting with Heatley’s blow to the head of Dallas’ Steve Ott followed by the Marchand/Umberger contact:
In neither case did the NHL issue an explanation other than to say that the suspension and fine were for “an elbow to the head.” I for one, was disgusted by Marchand’s play, but was even more offended by Heatley’s action (even if it did come at the expense of Ott). At least Marchand is chasing the puck and it’s in the vicinity. You could make a case that it’s incidental contact. Heatley goes out of his way to throw an elbow at a guy’s head after the puck isn’t only gone off Ott’s stick, it’s being passed by a second Dallas player. Ott was shaken up enough to stop play, while Umberger gets up and goes after Rich Peverley along the wall and then gets involved in the scrum in front of the Columbus net seconds later.
One of the few things things the players and fans want from the league is consistency. In my mind, the Heatley suspension should’ve been longer. The league’s general managers spent three days debating ways to get more serious about head shots and legislate their reduction from the game, and then the league gives Heatley just a two-game ban for executing a maneuver that once made Terry Taylor famous in the old WWF.
If the league had gotten the Heatley punishment correct, then a two-game ban for Marchand would’ve been understandable. But to equate these two plays and dole out the same discipline just doesn’t make any sense, especially in light of the three-game ban Pavel Kubina got for this hit a couple weeks ago:
So now we know what the league office really thinks about what the GMs were talking about all week. All we get is a lot of concerned rhetoric and then the same old measly suspensions that have no rhyme or reason to them.
I guess imagining that big roulette wheel with the ball that determines these suspensions is better than the alternative, which is that there’s actual human beings capable of reason making these decisions down in New York.
Why
I do find it rich to see Bruins fans complain when another player’s suspension isn’t long enough or about the inconsistency coming out of the head office.
Actually I think Ott was faking. That might just be the fact that I despise Ott, but it looked like Heatley just grazed Ott, and Ott did what he usually does which is embellish to gain an advantage. He would make a good Canadien.
I am in the “two games if fair but Heatley should have gotten more” camp.
I think the Heatley hit was far more deliberate where Marchand’s was at least an attempt for the puck.
I honestly don’t mind the league opting to suspend for these kind’s of hits, but I do think this is to some degree fall out from the Chara incident and accusations that Bruin’s players don’t get suspended (although Paille would certainly debate that contention).
I do hope that maybe this will get the refs to stop making crappy calls against the Bruins all over the ice (I am actually amazed Marchand didn’t get called for a penalty in Columbus given some of the really soft or just messed up calls).
I think Marchand was starting to make some bone headed moves in general and honestly think a couple of games watching might do him some good.
I have no problem with either, it wasn’t like Heatly’s hit was a forceful blind side hit to the head. It was an elbow to the face of a player who could see it coming. Busted lip or nose but not a concussion.
Marchand desrved the same. Another stupid penalty. He better get his head on right before we get the PO’s. Stupid plays like that could cost a game, series.
2 games sounded right and a suspension is good for 2 reasons…1) light a fire under brad and 2) maybe the refs will quit punishing the b’s for chara’s hit.
Well put, Ian. Use the suspension as an opportunity to see if he’ll be useful in the playoffs. The team needs all the goal scorers it can get and the trade deadline has passed. Maybe he takes the opportunity and runs with it. If not, no harm done.
Not saying he’s some great player, all I’m saying is he has potential and its not like they have to be sitting someone who is playing well in order to give him ice time. Give him a chance to play and see what he does with legit ice time.
Seguin with Recchi and Bergeron looks good to me. keeps Kelly and Peverley together and they work well together, too. I didn’t like seeing Recchi and Bergeron separated.

Is Seguin the next Adam Oates or something? The guy has skills, but hasn’t shown he can use it in a game. You guys need to back off the Kool-Aid….
Can we bench him unless there’s a shootout??
saguin not playing that well, big deal. A summer off eating burger king and lifting will make him great for next season. I like the kid too but I want to win, can’t keep hoping he will get better this year. Get over it. Play the veterans.
David, I agree Segeuin hasn’t earned the second line, but neither has anyone else currently in the bottom 6. The reason I’d like to see him there is that he is likely the future of this franchise and at some point he needs to get some minutes, play with the teams other top players, and get some opportunities. Yeah he’s going to make mistakes, but its got to happen sometime and the “this team is in a playoff race” excuse is getting old. If I recall correctly he got the Bruins 2 points on Tuesday.
I expect to see him on the 3rd line tonight. He didn’t earn the second line, and if Julien is indeed calling for accountability, then Seguin won’t see a boost in linemates unless he plays up to it. That said, Glad to see that Marchand will get a few games to cool his heels. Ryder has been better than last season, though that’s mostly because his teammates have been giving him better feeds.
If we see Paille or Kelly with a promotion, I’m going to lose it.
As much as I would like to see Seguin get more ice time, i’m guessing he wont see anything better than the 3rd line and under 10 mins a game the rest of the season. The way the Bruins have used him this season, even if the Bruins get hit with a ton of injuries I think its more likely they bring up Caron and Hamill to play more mins then Seguin.
KDC, you are right about giving extra minutes to Segs.
Second line with Bergy and Rex would give him a huge confidence boost.
Spot on Ian. I have no issues with the Marchand punishment. Heatley’s could have been longer, as it was clearly more deliberate, although the fact it was Steve Ott probably didn’t hurt Heatley’s case.
I actually think the NHL got this one right, the problem is that the Heatley suspension should have been longer. Like the 4 games Paille got earlier this season.
I would like to see Seguin on the second line. With his short ice time its hard to get in the flow of the game. Maybe a boost in minutes with consistent shifts will help him play better. But, the lines with probably be

This is what I think we all figured would happen. Regardless of what you think of the Chara hit the league really should have given him a couple of games at least. It was too big a story with too many people looking to vilify to let it pass. So…now Campbell et al are trying to appear to not be soft on the Bruins by giving a 2 game ban. Stupid but not unexpected.
hopefully this’ll be the end of the referee bias.
The constant chirping by Habs fans and Thornton’s stupid opinion did not help Marchand’s case.
