Bruins’ Chara looking forward to, not back at, match-up with Habs
WILMINGTON, Mass. — Bruins PR personnel made it clear as soon as availability began today that Zdeno Chara would not answer any questions pertaining to the hit on Max Pacioretty March 8 in Montreal.
With the Canadiens set to land at TD Garden tomorrow for the first Bruins-Habs game since that incident at the Bell Centre, the ranks of the Boston media were swelled by the arrival of their Montreal counterparts. It was established right off the bat that Chara would only talk about tomorrow night’s game.
So I’m going to do something I don’t usually do and provide my readers with a transcript of how the media chat with Chara went today after practice at Ristuccia Arena:
On a possible playoff preview with the Habs
“Obviously, with the standings right now it looks like it could be a match-up. So we’ll see what’s going to happen obviously in the next 10 games. But it’s a good possibility.”
On whether this is a message game or just another game
“I think we all know it’s a big game for both teams. The rivalry’s there, the competition is there. We’re just trying to really focus on our game and establish what we were working on trying to do last game and the previous few games before we were in that slump.”
On if it’s difficult to stop Montreal’s speed
“It is. Obviously they have a lot of speed, a lot of skill up front. They play really good system-wise and they all buy into it. It’s obviously hard to play against a team like that.”
On if he expects retribution from the Canadiens
“I don’t know. Obviously we’ll see.”
On the Bruins controlling their emotions
“You just have to be in control. Obviously it’s part of the game to be emotional and play with a lot of energy and jump. But you just have to keep the emotions bottled up and not [let] the emotions take over the game.”
Chara went on to say that he hasn’t heard back from Pacioretty after reaching out to him, and reiterated that even against the Bruins’ most hated rivals he’s not trying to hurt anyone out on the ice. He knows he’s taken a lot of heat from media and fans in Montreal, but he tries not to think about that.
The bottom line is, this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion by a rabid Montreal fan base that’s just a little too caught up in the Boston-Montreal aspect of this. There’s no doubt, tempers would be calmer had the hit come from a player for Nashville or Florida. This was all an accident caused as much by poor rink structure and safety measures as by Chara’s natural brute strength. To look at it any other way is to really miss the point.

I just hope the previous incident doesn’t remove the focus from the Bruins. I also hope they go out there and fight the full 60 minutes for a win.
I am not convinced they have anyone on their team with the balls to actually go toe to toe with Chara, but I can easily see a chippy game where they will try to provoke him into something. Chara needs to stay cool, but play on that edge. When he is mad but controlled he often plays his best.
Take it right to the Habs. last time in Boston we beat them on every measurable scale repeat the effort. Forget this Charra, Max, Recchi thing and play like it’s your last game it’s what your paid to do. Let the media and us fans babble over the he said she said garbage go play hockey!
I’ve always had respect for Reechi over the years, regardless of what teams he has played for (including the Flyers). With his recent comments about Max, he has lost my respect aas it is apparent he has become just another bonehead Bruin.
This is going to be a battle of the transition games. The B’s need to be lights-out on D… force the pucks to the corners and beat up on the Habs along the boards. MTL only scores when they float around in the slot, or off the occasional slapper from P.K. Subban.
Also, I would like to see a rematch of this:

No apology needed. Thanks for alerting me. I had heard it on the radio but if I hadn’t had it on, your comment would’ve been a huge help.

I apologize Matt, your one step ahead of me
George, read what I just posted.

I sometimes feel the pressure’s there to do it all against the Canadiens, but the way to win is to lock down, control their speed, and jump on the few chances they get. Trouble is, that’s not “exciting” Bruins home rink hockey and we might see the emotions get the better of them.
Hold the puck, get back on D and quick counter-strikes. The ol’ New Jersey philosophy.
BTW I predict White will jump someone who doesn’t normally fight and the Canadiens will try to draw the Bruins out of focusing on what they need to do. They need to slow the Canadiens down by being physical and they must capitalize on the PP no matter how bad it has been.
MattK,
Today on the radio I heard Recchi say that it appears Paciaretty’s injuries were embellished by the Canadiens to get Chara in more trouble. I know some fans were wondering how anyone could recover so fast from a fractured vertebrae and “severe” concussion, but to hear a respected veteran player publicly say it is pretty interesting to me.
For the Bruins it is
Congrats to Looch. Question. Is thirty goals the old forty?
For sure the 2 pts are crucial. They better not let Robin Givens interview Z. I wouldn’t want to see him go Chris Brown. Fire Baaaad.
z has nothing to fear from miracle max’s teammates.
The whole team had better get the heads on straight for this one. They were gross for the entire first period last night. If they had played a skilled team like MTL, they would have been down 4-0 . They need these two points badly. It is time to start playing like men again
