Reports say Bruins’ Marchand will not face ban for hit on Habs’ Gomez
According to the Twitter feed of Sportsnet analyst Nick Kypreos and several other national hockey media types, Brad Marchand will not endure a second suspension in as many weeks.
There had been fears that Marchand’s high hit on Scott Gomez in the third period last night, which earned him a minor penalty for roughing, could bring with it further discipline from the league.
“I didn’t even think it was a penalty, let alone something to be worried about,” Marchand told NESN.com after the Bruins downed the Canadiens, 7-0, last night. “As far as I know, it’s a good hit.”
And as far as the league’s disciplinarians are concerned, it wasn’t worthy of even a hearing let alone punishment.

renstien how can you say that the NHL is the worst officiated of the 4 major sports? While there off ice rulings are inconsistent at best the rulings in the game are far better than the NBA and NFL. In the NBA you have officials that make calls to fix games! Then in the NFL there’s a double standard, like the “Tom Brady rule” a low hit to a star quarterback will lead to a penalty when the exact same hit to some one like Ryan Fitzpatrick would not be called.
And as for the hit it was an open ice hit which is a huge play in hockey! It can change the pace of a game in an instant. If your going to take away a clean open icebox like the one Marchand threw let’s also take away fighting because a player might get hurt in a fight too. He’ll while were at it let’s get rid of those dangerous sticks they use and switch to a ball instead of a hard puck. Then we can change the name to ice soccer. If that’s what you are looking for go watch some womens Olympic hockey!
Either way he cannot take these chances. In the playoffs a penalty could win or loose the game. This kid is a time bomb.He just got suspended and was moved down in the lineup. To take a chance like that just tells me he thinks he will hurt us in the playoffs
The issue here is not the score in the game, but problem the NHL has with officiating in general. It is by far the worst officiated league of the four major professional leagues, both on ice and off ice. Rules are selectively enforced, and the league and Players Association has shown a complete disregard for improving the game in terms of safety.
If the media is to be believed, the NHL is trying to remove head shots from the leagues. And, if you watch the replay this was clearly a head shot. In fact, for the last 20 years, any head butt has been met with a suspension. They usually happen during fights and are much more obvious.
As for those silly hats that NHL players wear, I don’t really think we should call them helmets. The straps aren’t done up, they don’t stay on. They don’t even protect a player from an errant stick!
Again, folks, watch the name calling or you will be blocked.

Didn’t know Marchand played in the NFL. A 15 yard penalty would have put Montreal in field goal range. Too bad it wouldn’t have done much against the touchdown that was scored against them last night!
P.s. They wear helmets in the NHL too moron.
I think most of you are idiots, or did not watch the replay. The part of the hit that caused the bleading was the fact that he head-butted Gomez in the nose. Watch the hit again, he tucked his head down and lead with it. It’s a 15-yard unnecessary roughness call in the NFL, and those guys wear helmets.
I don’t think this one was any different than the huge hit Subban laid on Marchand. It was just a big hit from the front.
I don’t even think it deserved the penalty and I kind of think in a closer game it likely wouldn’t have been called, but given the score the refs may have seen it as unnecessary.
He got a penalty because the game was out of reach and having Marchand sit for 2 minutes helps prevent it from getting out of hand. If the score at the time was 2-0 I doubt a call would be made.
Neither are suspendable. The oversensitivity must end
Don’t know why anyone would think he would be. Everyone is hyper-sensitive right now. Komisarek’s hit in the Avs game too. Great hit.
As for the Plekanec should be suspended talk, sounds like Hab fan talk to me. He was penalized, no clear intent, pot meet kettle.
The fake fly by set up that hit. Gomer thought he was home a cooled.
A good hockey play by Marchand. Glad to see the league isn’t back on crack. Any word of a discipline hearing for the Plekanec high stick? Horton went in to deliver a somewhat tardy hit, but his approach was clean and Plekanec just swatted at him.
I don’t get how this is even a penalty. Marchand flattened him… Gomez’s body would have taken a totally different trajectory if the head was the primary point of contact. If that was a hit to the head or neck, and it caused a spill of that magnitude, he would be dead.
It was 6-0 at the time so I did wince a bit at first glance. Sticking with the SNL theme Marchy has a little Gilley in him. You see another player bleeding and you go Marchy? Marchy? MARCHY
Did he even hit Gomez in the head, or did he catch him high on the chest? I couldn’t tell in real-time or from the replay angles that were shown.
Either way, it wasn’t a blindside hit per rule 48, since Marchand was in front of Gomez when he hit him, so there really should be no review, fine or suspension.
This is getting out of hand. He got a penalty. A suspension for that? Gimme a break.
